Cabaret’s cast and crew had a successful night at the annual Olivier Awards, taking home seven of the show’s nine awards for best production. On Sunday night (April 10), the biggest stars in London’s theatre business joined together to hand out prizes for best actor/actress, best director, best choreography, and other categories, including best musical. You’ll find all the information you need here, including the complete list of nominations and winners.
What Are The Olivier Awards?
The Olivier Awards are like the Oscars for London theatre. The Society of London Theatre holds the awards ceremony and presentation every year to honor the best of the city’s professional theatres. The Society of West End Theatre Awards, currently known as the Laurence Oliver Awards, was first presented in 1976. After the death of a British actor, director, and founder of the National Theatre Company Laurence Olivier, the name was changed in 1984. All nominees are interviewed by a jury that includes representatives from the arts community as well as individuals chosen for their dedication to London’s theatre scene.
What Happened During The Ceremony?
The Olivier Awards returned to the Royal Albert Hall in 2022 with host Jason Manford after a two-year absence due to the epidemic. For his work as Emcee in Cabaret, Eddie Redmayne (The Danish Girl, Fantastic Beasts) was awarded Best Actor for a Musical at this year’s Tony Awards. Cabaret won Best Musical Revival, and Redmayne’s co-star Jessie Buckley won Best Actress in a Musical for her performance as Sally Bowles in the production.
To which Redmayne responded: “This is the dream. “This is the one for me.” When I was a child, I played this role in a school. ‘It was the item that truly sparked my interest in theatre,” I recall. It was Buckley’s decision to join him on this “trip” that made it possible for the actor to do so, he said. It was “the stuff of dreams,” he said to PA, “to be able to introduce her singing Cabaret and then peek through the curtain and hear her bellow that track.” “You are one of the greats and thank you for that pleasure.”
“It’s such a great honor to be part of this community, which I consider my family,” Buckley said as she accepted her prize. All those years ago, you welcomed me with open arms. This is just beautiful.” The performance also paid respect to those who have passed away recently in the profession, such as actors Sir Antony Sher and Dame Barbara Windsor, as well as composer Stephen Sondheim, throughout the awards ceremony.
