86:Storyline

For nine years, the Republic of San Magnolia and the Empire of Giad have been at war. The Republic has created its own autonomous units, termed Juggernauts, which are remotely controlled by a Handler after first suffering severe casualties against the Empire’s autonomous mechanised Legions. All “86” (San Magnolia’s Colorata minority) Juggernauts are flown by people, despite the public’s belief that they are being fought between robots and humans.

Prior to being formally recognised as subhuman, the Colorata people were treated as second-class citizens by the majority Alba race and the Alba-supremacist Republic government. Not being allowed to have personal identities and imprisoned in 86th District internment camps, the 86 were obliged to participate in the Republic’s conflict with Imperial forces in order to obtain better care and treatment.

San Magnolia military officer and Alba aristocrat, Major Vladilena “Lena” Milizé, is an ardent advocate for the Colorata minority and the Republic’s purposeful deception of the general population. The Spearhead Squadron of the Eastern Front, an elite force made up of 86 veterans who have earned their stripes, assigns her as its Handler. One of the most well-known military units is the Spearhead Squadron, which is led by Shinei “The Undertaker” Nouzen.

The squad’s infamy originates from the mental health of its commanding officers, who have gone as far as committing suicide or going insane while in charge of the squad. Spearhead Squadron comes to know Lena throughout her stint as commander of 86’s contingent. It is also revealed that the Republic and the battle with the Empire are not what they appear to be. Lena and Shinei learn this at the same moment.

86: Reception

Dengeki Novel Prize’s 23rd Annual Grand Prize went to the light novel. Takarajimasha’s yearly guide book Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi! placed the light novel second in 2018 in the bunkobon category.  In 2019, it came in fifth place.

According to Comic Book Resources’ Joe Ballard: “86-Eighty-Six is anything but your normal light book series. It portrays conflict, drama, the supernatural, and the shockingly discriminating beliefs of a nation’s general populace with a movingly honest representation.”

UK Anime News complimented volume 1 of the light novel, calling it thought-provoking, emotive and exceedingly difficult to put down.” According to The Fandom Post, the first volume “wasn’t really original,” but it was pleased by how the “bloodless war” premise was subverted and how the narrative and characters were developed were “pretty strong.”
