Njoku suffered severe burns to his face and hands after a bonfire mishap at his residence on September 29, 2023. A fireball burst out of the fire pit as he was attempting to light it. He said that the blow “should have blinded” him even though his eyes were open at the time.
On October 1, 2023, he decided to play in Week 4 against the Baltimore Ravens despite his injuries. In a defeat, he recorded a team-high six receptions for 77 yards while sporting a mask to protect his face. Playing through the agony gave him a “rush,” and he wanted to see his team win.
