In our cast section, we’ll discuss who plays whom.
More details on the upcoming Spider-Man movie can be found below (while you’re here, learn how to watch the Spider-Man movies chronologically). This includes its debut date, plot points, recurring cast members, the sequel to Across the Spider-Verse, and much more.
Across the Spider-Verse Release Date
On June 2, 2023, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will hit theatres. The movie was initially scheduled to wallcrawl its way into theatres in April 2022, but the epidemic caused its release to be postponed to October.
Due to the additional work that needs to be done, it was delayed a second time. According to co-screenwriters and executive producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller (via Deadline(opens in new tab)), over 1,000 people are working on this highly ambitious animated film, so everyone needs time to make it as excellent as they can.
Lord and Miller wrote in a statement to Deadline (opens in new tab): “It would be OK if we attempted to release it on schedule. However, it is expected that the new movie will be every bit as innovative, exceptional, and fantastic as the first one. We so decided to “make it fantastic.”
Additionally, Miller revealed on Twitter that Metro Boomin, a hip-hop and trap musician, is penning the soundtrack for the film (opens in new tab). Let’s hope Metro Boomin’s past superhero-themed albums have an impact on the possibly slamming music for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
The Cast of Across the Spider-Verse
The actors that played Moore, Steinfeld, Johnson, Henry, and Velez in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse will return. Oscar Isaac, who appeared in the movie’s post-credits scene, will co-star. Lee is back as Lyla from the closing credits scene as well.
Jessica Drew, alias Spider-Woman, will be portrayed by Issa Rae (Insecure, Rap Sh!t). The fan-favorite heroine, who will also be pregnant in the movie, will be voiced by Rae, Sony revealed(opens in new tab) during 2022 Across the Spider-Verse presentation at the Annecy Film Festival.
Along with Drew, played by Rae, three additional characters were confirmed. In his first-ever voice acting role, Shea Wigham (Boardwalk Empire, True Detective) is voicing Captain Stacey, the father of Steinfeld’s Spider-Gwen. Jorma Taccona will play the Vulture from The Lonely Island in the Earth-65 universe.
The main adversary of the film, The Spot, has also been cast as Jason Schwartzmann (Fargo, Moonrise Kingdom). The Spot, also known as Jonathan Ohnn, is a lesser-known Spider-Villain who attempted to replicate the abilities of the Marvel superhero Cloak (in the comics, anyway). Unsurprisingly, Ohnn’s body develops enormous black patches due to the wrong experiment. Ohnn starts utilizing these for evil purposes after realizing they are portals to other realms and universes.
The Spot seems like the ideal antagonist, given that Across the Spider-Verse will explore the Spider-Man Multiverse. He will undoubtedly be a severe danger to Miles and his company. According to co-director Kemp Powers, Spot’s visual style was greatly influenced by Valve’s renowned videogame franchise Portal (via IndieWire(opens in new tab)). Additionally, a new toy leak for the, er, Spot says, “If The Spot can comprehend the true potential of his talents, he might pose a menace to the entire world” (thanks to Reddit(opens in new tab)). Sounds menacing.
The Plot of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
The movie’s official summary is: “For the upcoming installment of the Spider-Verse saga, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Miles Morales makes a triumphant comeback. “When Spider-Man and Gwen Stacy are reunited, they are launched across the Multiverse, where they come across a group of Spider-People tasked with safeguarding the Multiverse’s very existence.
Miles must rethink what it means to be a hero to save the ones he cares about most when the heroes disagree over how to tackle a new threat and pit him against the other Spiders.” After the release of the 2021 trailer, Phil Lord and Chris Miller spoke with Entertainment Weekly(opens in new tab) (EW) to discuss why they chose to split the story of Miles’ arc across two films.
Miller and Lord declared that Miles’ tale was magnificent. “To our astonishment, after writing down what we believed the account should be, we discovered that it needed to be split into two films. Both are being worked on at the moment. The tale of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will span six different realities, each with its distinct animation style, according to Empire(opens in new tab).
The Earth-50101, also known as Mumbatten, and Nueva York, which serves as Spider-Man 2099’s setting and is based on Syd Mead’s neo-futuristic drawings, are depicted in the 2021 teaser. We’ll also travel to the worlds of Miles (Earth-1610) and Spider-Gwen (Earth-65), but the whereabouts of the other two are unknown.
Trailer for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
On December 13, the first trailer for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was released. And when Lord, Miller, and the rest of the cast hinted at how huge this movie would be, they weren’t kidding. The teaser begins with Miles Morales and his mother, Rio having a private conversation somewhere that hasn’t been revealed. Rio laments that her “little boy” is growing up too quickly before giving Miles an inspiring lecture on the need to take care of himself, to which Miles nods in agreement. As Rio is speaking, many multiverse-based scenes begin, including a staggering number of additional Spider-People from throughout the Spider-Verse.
A shift in the multi-verse.

However, as soon as Miles vows to take care of himself, the teaser abruptly shifts into a battle for his life, with other Spider-Men pursuing him and Spider-Man 2099 yelling, “Who do you think you are?” Cut to Spider-Man 2099 declaring, “We’re meant to be the good guys,” to Gwen Stacey’s dramatic, “We’re supposed to be the good boys” statement. The dialogue and scenes in the trailer have been edited to mislead viewers about how the movie will go. Even so, it’s exciting to see, and we can’t wait to see more before the launch.
