Pentatonix was started modestly. The three buddies from childhood, Scott Hoying, Mitch Grassi, and Kirstin Maldonado, are from Arlington, Texas. While in the high school choir, they began performing a cappella trios together.

Following their high school viral success, Scott Hoying, Mitch Grassi, and Kirstin Maldonado, the original members of Pentatonix, split up. They later got back together to try out for the NBC competition’s third season.
