Asjia O’Neal is a star volleyball player who plays for the Texas Longhorns and the United States national team. She is also the daughter of a former NBA player and a courageous survivor of two open-heart surgeries. But who are her parents, and what is their story? Let’s find out.
Who is Asjia O’Neal Father?
Asjia O’Neal Dad, Jermaine O’Neal, is a retired American professional basketball player who played for 18 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He was drafted straight out of high school by the Portland Trail Blazers in 1996 and later played for the Indiana Pacers, Toronto Raptors, Miami Heat, Boston Celtics, Phoenix Suns, Golden State Warriors, and Dallas Mavericks.
He was a six-time NBA All-Star, a three-time All-NBA selection, and the NBA Most Improved Player in 2002. He also won a gold medal with the USA national team at the 2006 FIBA World Championship.
Jermaine O’Neal married his high school sweetheart, Mesha, in 2001, and they have two children: Asjia and Jermaine Jr. He has been supportive of his daughter’s volleyball career and her health challenges. He also helped her organize campus activism during the George Floyd protests in 2020.
Who is Asjia O’Neal Mother?
Asjia O’Neal’s mother, Mesha O’Neal, is a former model and a businesswoman. She runs a luxury lifestyle brand called Mesha O’Neal Collection, which offers clothing, accessories, and home decor. She also co-founded a non-profit organization called The Asjia Project, which aims to raise awareness and funds for congenital heart defect research and treatment.
Mesha O’Neal has been a pillar of strength for her daughter, especially during her two open-heart surgeries. She has also encouraged her to pursue her dreams and passions, both on and off the court. She often posts pictures and videos of her daughter’s volleyball achievements on her Instagram account.

Asjia O’Neal Heart Surgery
Before her first collegiate season, the volleyball legend from Texas was encouraged to give up the sport. O’Neal was born with a mitral valve leak, a condition in which blood leaks because the valve between the chambers of the heart is not closed all the way.
Not long after she started playing volleyball in 2013, she experienced her first problem with the illness. O’Neal needed open heart surgery since her increased physical activity was making the leak worse. To block the leak, a ring was put around the valve.
O’Neal’s health deteriorated once more in 2019, and this time, medical professionals discovered a second leak in her tricuspid valve, necessitating an open heart surgery on January 14, 2020.

Joe Burrow, the quarterback for the Bengals, owns a portion of the Columbus Fury, which selected the middle blocker with the first overall pick, No. 1. On January 25, 2024, the Fury take on Grand Rapids in their inaugural game.
There’s no lack of experience against other pros for O’Neal. She’s a member of the US Women’s National Team alongside Texas greats and fellow middles Brionne Butler and Chiaka Ogbogu.
