A hugely successful national advertising campaign with “Nike,” called the “Bo Knows” series, insured that his initial would be known as “Bo” forever across the United States. His athletic abilities were utilized by the “Los Angeles Raiders” of the NFL and the “Kansas City Royals,” “Chicago White Sox,” and “California Angels” of Major League Baseball (MLB).

Even though a hip injury ended his promising football career, he kept playing baseball until he retired. Both on the football field and the baseball pitch, Jackson was legendary for his incredible speed and hard hits. The idea of becoming a Hall of Fame football or baseball player was never something I actively pursued.

When I was younger, I used to spend a lot of time playing. During an episode of ESPN Classic’s “Sports-Century,” Bo Jackson famously said the word “Period.” Jackson was a cultural phenomenon who forever changed American sports, even though he was never able to fully realize his physical potential at the professional level due to injuries.

Bo Jackson Early Life

Bo Vincent Edward Jackson was born on November 30, 1962, in Bessemer, Alabama. He’s the eighth of ten kids, and he’s the first boy. The high school he graduated from was McAdory. Back when he was a high school football player, he often broke records as a running back.

In baseball, he hit 20 home runs in 25 games. He won the Alabama state decathlon championship twice, setting multiple state records along the way. Jackson had the opportunity to play professional baseball after being selected by the New York Yankees in the 1982 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft, but he turned down the offer in favor of playing collegiate football for Auburn.

He claimed his mother had made a promise to him that he would be the first in his family to attend university. Jackson was a multi-talented athlete at Auburn, having competed in both baseball and track. He has distinguished himself as an athlete in all three major disciplines. Bo Jackson Career

After Jackson completed his university football career, he planned to try his hand at professional football. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers picked him with the first overall pick in the 1986 NFL Draft. After missing his senior year of collegiate baseball to visit the Buccaneers’ facilities, the team offered him a chance to play for them, but he declined.

The Buccaneers promised him the visit was NCAA-approved, but since it wasn’t, he couldn’t participate in collegiate sports. So that they could convince him to play football instead of baseball in the NFL, he thinks the Buccaneers purposefully did not receive NCAA authorization.

He was picked by the Kansas City Royals in the 1986 amateur draught, but instead of signing with them, he decided to join another team. Jackson played 53 games for the Class AA Memphis Chicks after signing a three-year, $1.07 million contract with the Kansas City Royals.

In September of 1986, he was promoted to the big leagues, and the following season, the Royals signed him. After being released by the Royals in 1991 due to an injury, he signed a three-year contract with the Chicago White Sox worth a total of $13,300,000 ($700,000 per year in guaranteed money and $8.15 million in potential bonuses).

Jackson was a member of the White Sox in 1991 and 1993, however, he was out of action for the whole 1992 season due to hip replacement surgery. At 32 years old, he called it quits after his professional baseball career with the California Angels ended.

As you see Bo Jackson hit this guy at third with a missile, keep in mind that he did it while wearing a prosthetic hip. Moreover, he almost certainly added, “Don’t you even try it, you motherfucker.”

183rd overall, Jackson was selected by the Los Angeles Raiders in the seventh round of the 1987 NFL Draft. Initially indifferent and intent on focusing on baseball, Jackson warmed to the notion of playing in the NFL after learning that Raiders owner Al Davis was amenable to the possibility of his playing both sports simultaneously.

For the next five years, he’ll be paid $7.4 million, but he has to sit out the NFL season so he can complete a full Major League Baseball season before joining the Raiders. Jackson was supposedly given the largest signing bonus ever given to an NFL player who was not a quarterback by Davis, who reportedly gave him $500,000.

In his four seasons in the NFL, Jackson averaged 5.4 yards per carry on the way to 2,782 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns. In addition, he had 40 receptions for 352 yards and two touchdowns. In January of his final professional football season (1991), he dislocated his hip after making a tackle.

His left hip, which caused to develop avascular necrosis, had to be replaced. As a result of his retirement from baseball in 1994 due to injuries, the Royals let him go.

Estimating the distance on this throw was tricky, but I find it to be 285 feet. Also, I estimate the time of the flight to be 2.60 seconds. From these values, I find that ball was traveling at 100.5 mph and came out at an angle of 8.2 degrees.

Bo Jackson Personal Life

Linda Jackson, Jackson’s wife, works as a counselor for those in recovery from substance abuse. The Morgans have a son named Garrett and two boys named Nicholas and a daughter named Morgan. After retiring from sports, he fulfilled his commitment to his mother and earned a degree in family and child development from Auburn University in 1995.
