In 2012, it took home a Peabody Award. In order to co-host NBC Sports’ National Football League pregame show GrandStand with Jack Buck, Gumbel was hired by the network in the fall of 1975. He hosted a number of sporting events for NBC, including college basketball, the National Football League, and Major League Baseball, from 1975 until January 1982 (when he left to head The Today Show).

When he presented the prime-time coverage of the 1988 Summer Olympics from Seoul and the 1990 PGA Tour, he made a comeback to sportscasting for NBC. Starting on September 27, 1982, NBC News appointed Gumbel as the main anchor of Today. From 1984 to 1989, Gumbel broadcast from a number of locations around the United States and Europe, including Europe, South America, Vietnam, and Vatican City.

Gumbel has a sizable fan following and multiple Emmys for his work on Today. After former Today anchors Matt Lauer and Katie Couric, he is the third co-host to have served the longest. On January 3, 1997, after 15 years, he left the show.

After Gumbel relocated to CBS, he presented a number of shows there until joining The Early Show as a co-host on November 1, 1999. On September 11, 2001, Gumbel was anchoring The Early Show in the morning. He informed CBS viewers of the September 11 attacks first. On May 17, 2002, Gumbel departed from The Early Show and CBS. Who Are Bryant Gumbel’s Parents?

Richard and Rhea Gumbel are Bryant’s parents. He was raised on the South Side of the city and graduated from Bates College. Bryant, American sportscaster and television journalist Charles Gumbel is well recognized for his 15 years as co-host of NBC’s Today Show. He is the younger brother of sportscaster Greg Gumbel.

Bryant Gumbel’s NBC Career

NBC Sports hired Gumbel in the fall of 1975 to co-host its National Football League pre-game show GrandStand with Jack Buck. At the time, Gumbel was already a local evening news sports anchor for KNBC in Los Angeles.

While Gumbel was working at NBC Sports, one of his most treasured memories was being present at the “Epic in Miami” NFL playoff game involving the Miami Dolphins and San Diego Chargers.

“If you didn’t like this football game, then you don’t like football!” he exclaimed to the crowd at the conclusion of the match. Two days later, he started co-hosting Today, so this would be one of his last jobs for NBC Sports.

When Gumbel first started working for Today, he was the lead sports correspondent for the show. He contributed twice-weekly features to the show, including a recurring segment called “Sportsman of the Week,” which highlighted young players. Tom Brokaw left Today in June 1981 to co-anchor NBC Nightly News with Roger Mudd, starting in the spring of 1982, according to an announcement made by NBC.

When the search began for Brokaw’s successor, NBC News correspondents John Palmer, Chris Wallace, Bob Kur, Bob Jamieson, and Jessica Savitch were among the first names on the list. Throughout the summer of 1981, while Brokaw was on vacation, the applicants tried out for his position.

By luck, Gumbel was considered for the position in August 1981 after filling in for Today co-anchor Jane Pauley at the last minute. He was so good at impressing NBC officials, including executive producer Steve Friedman, that he was soon in the running to be Today’s anchor.

A group inside the NBC News division was adamant that Gumbel should be replaced by another news correspondent rather than a sports reporter, despite Friedman and other NBC executives supporting Gumbel as Brokaw’s successor. Bill Small, the head of NBC News at the time, supported Wallace.

NBC News decided to divide the difference, choosing Wallace from Washington to anchor the show and Gumbel to anchor it. In New York, Pauley would continue to co-anchor. On December 18, 1981, Brokaw announced his departure from Today, and on January 4, 1982, Gumbel took over.

The Gumbel-Pauley-Wallace agreement dubbed the “Mod Squad” within the group, was only in place for nine months. On paper, the layout seemed intriguing, but on television, it looked awkward. Gumbel was the show’s traffic officer, introducing and ending the show and doing interviews in New York; however, Pauley and Wallace were in charge of news reading, and Wallace was the one who conducted all of the hard news interviews in Washington.

As ABC’s Good Morning America continued to lead, NBC News appointed Gumbel as Today’s primary anchor on September 27, 1982, with Pauley serving as his co-anchor. John Palmer, a former White House correspondent, was promoted to Today’s New York-based news anchor, while Wallace took over as the primary White House correspondent covering President Ronald Reagan.

Gumbel gained a lot of followers and multiple Emmys for his work on Today. After Matt Lauer and Katie Couric, he has been a co-host of Today for the third longest. On January 3, 1997, after 15 years, he left the show.

Gumbel has been on Today from time to time after leaving. On December 30, 2013, he made an appearance to host with Lauer and Pauley in honor of the show’s 60th anniversary.
