With this new award, BTS becomes the first act ever to win Global Recording Artist of the Year back-to-back (they previously won in 2020). The group’s leader, RM, expressed gratitude for the honour of being named IFPI’s Global Recording Artist of the Year.

We’ve heard that this is the first time any artist has ever won Artist Of The Year twice in a row, so we’re grateful to have gotten such an honour. The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) assigns points to artists based on how well their whole career does internationally across streaming services and tangible media like vinyl.

Taylor Swift, Adele, Drake, and Ed Sheeran rounded out the top five on the IFPI’s Global Artist Chart, with BTS in the first place. The Weeknd, Billie Eilish, Justin Bieber, and Olivia Rodrigo rounded out the top 10. Notable among these is the debut performance by fellow K-pop boyband SEVENTEEN, who debuted at number nine.

In a statement to Billboard, IFPI chief executive Frances Moore credited BTS’s “phenomenal success over the last year” to the group’s “creativity, hard work, and continual commitment” to expand their reach with their music.

He went on to say that the band’s ability to perform in three different languages was proof of their extraordinary worldwide appeal and that their fans’ energy and dedication had propelled them to the top of Billboard’s Global Artist Chart for back-to-back years.

Additionally, Jungkook of BTS debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 with a solo single, “Stay Alive,” which was produced by Suga. After J-Hope, Suga, and V, Jungkook becomes the fourth member of the band to have a solo hit on the charts.
