BTS Declares That They Will Participate In South Korea’s Military Service

All non-disabled South Korean males between 18 and 28 are required to serve in the military, with several notable exceptions, including professional sports, traditional musicians, and dancers. The group’s top age limit has been pushed back to 2020, but it has been confirmed that all members will serve.

The members of the K-pop group BTS are, according to their agents, planning to complete their mandatory military service in South Korea. According to their record label Big Hit Music, members of BTS are “honored to serve” their country. Following their military obligation, the band members RM, Jin, SUGA, j-hope, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook will reunite “around 2025,” according to a corporate statement provided to Sky News.

In South Korea, all non-disabled men between 18 and 28 are required to serve in the military for between 18 and 21 months. However, athletes, classical musicians, and traditional dancers who have won top honors in competitions that elevate the country’s reputation are exempt.

There has been much debate about whether or not the members of BTS should be required to serve in the South Korean military as part of the national service or not since the South Korean government enacted a bill in 2020 extending the age limit for K-pop stars to 30. Big Hit Music has stated that they are “going forward with plans” to complete their service.

At 29 years old, Jin is the group’s senior member and will initiate the action. “Group member Jin will commence the procedure as soon as his schedule for his solo release is completed at the end of October,” Big Hit announced in a statement. Then he will enlist in the military per the rules set down by the Korean government.

Individual plans have been made for the military service of the other members of the group. The statement continued, “The company and the members of BTS look forward to reuniting as a group around 2025, once they have completed their service commitment.” In support of Busan, South Korea’s candidacy for the World Expo 2030, the band reunited over the weekend and performed for free there.

In June, the group’s members stated they would be going on hiatus to focus on individual endeavors. The Korean boy band BTS (short for Bangtan Sonyeondan, or “Beyond The Scene”) was formed in 2010 and has since been nominated for several Grammy Awards. After releasing their first single in 2013, BTS quickly gained worldwide popularity, eventually becoming South Korea’s most successful music act.

They met with Vice President Joe Biden in May to discuss hate crimes against Asians and to advocate for more excellent Asian representation in media and politics. In 2021, they became the first act to win the award for a global recording artist of the year from the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) for two consecutive years.

They have also won several awards and been nominated at the Brit Awards in the UK and the Grammys in the US. In 2019, they became the first Korean group to play at Wembley Stadium, and their first night there sold out in just 90 minutes.

We have no additional details regarding the band members’ military service timeline.
