Once there was a man who wanted to listen to special songs from BTS, a famous band. But instead of waiting like everyone else, he pretended to be one of the BTS members. He thought this would help him get the songs early.

However, pretending to be someone else is not a good thing to do. When people found out, the man had to go to a place called prison. This is the story of how pretending to be BTS led him to big trouble.

Man ‘A’ has been handed a prison sentence for impersonating BTS members in order to obtain unreleased songs. The Seoul Central District Court, on May 16, confirmed the one-year prison term for the 29-year-old ‘A’, who was charged with violating the Act on Promotion of Information and Communications Network Utilization and Information Protection.

According to reports, ‘A’ was arrested for using his cellphone to impersonate BTS members and contact a music producer. His intention was purportedly to acquire details about the BTS members’ military service and obtain information regarding their unreleased guide tracks.

Between August and September of 2022, ‘A’ pretended to be BTS member SUGA. Through discussions with a music producer, he managed to obtain unreleased guide tracks for BTS’ songs. Then, in November of the same year, ‘A’ impersonated the producer to contact SUGA, aiming to gather details about album releases and military service schedules.

Additionally, ‘A’ was discovered to have impersonated BTS’ V to acquire more than 10 unreleased guide tracks from another producer. In the initial trial, ‘A’ received a one-year prison sentence due to the potential for significant financial and social harm to BTS and their record label caused by his actions. The appeals court has now upheld the ruling from the first trial.
