BTS RM’s Solo Album ‘Indigo’ Sells Over 500,000 Copies on Its First Day of Release

BTS RM’s Solo Album ‘Indigo’: RM, a member of BTS, quickly sold 500,000 copies of his latest album. The long-awaited debut studio album by solo singer RM, titled “Indigo,” was released on December 2 KST.

Hanteo claims that on its first day of release, ‘Indigo’ sold more than 550,000 copies. After Baekhyun of EXO, Lim Young Woong of Big Bang, and Jin of Big H, RM is the fourth Korean male solo performer to sell over 500,000 copies on the first day of release.

Indigo Album

South Korean rapper RM’s first studio album, titled Indigo, was released on Big Hit Music on December 2, 2022. This is the rapper’s first studio album since 2012’s Mono (2018). The album features guest appearances from Erykah Badu and Anderson.

Paak, Tablo of Epik High, Kim Sa-wol, Paul Blanco, Mahalia, Colde, Youjeen of Cherry Filter, and Park Ji-yoon, is being called a “documentation” or “archive” of RM’s late twenties. The ninth track, a duet with Youjeen titled “Wild Flower,” served as the album’s lead single and was accompanied by a music video.

RM talked about experiencing creative burnout and losing his sense of direction after the release of the band’s fourth studio album Map of the Soul: 7 (2020) and the single “Dynamite” in June 2022, during BTS’ ninth-anniversary celebrations, when the band members announced they would be devoting more time to individual music projects going forward.

He said that the pressures of his position in the band, as well as the continual expectations of the K-pop industry, had made it impossible for him to develop as an artist and that he needed some space to reflect on and find his musical identity.

RM also stated that he wanted fans to see each member of BTS, including himself, as an individual, rather than just a part of the group, and that each member of the band was working on solo material for an upcoming release.

During a private July Livestream on Weverse, he updated viewers on the development of his own album, saying it was “90 per cent done” and that the only remaining tasks were the production of music videos and supplementary material to be released alongside the album.

In addition, he stated that the music would be quite different from that of 2018’s Mono, saying, “If ‘Mono’ recorded my 2016 to ’18, then I suppose this new album serves as my journal and archive for 2019 to ’22.

Album Release Date

CEO Jiwon Park of Hybe Corporation revealed that RM would be the third member of BTS (after J-Hope and Jin) to release a solo project, his first album, during the company’s annual community meeting on YouTube on November 10.

After starting work on the album at the start of 2019, RM announced its title and release date in a series of Instagram stories: Indigo, December 2, 2022. A follow-up post on Weverse indicated possible collaborations on the album by saying he had “worked hard on it for the past four years” and that “fun buddies” were included.

Big Hit Music’s official platform announcement notice published shortly thereafter affirmed cooperation with other artists but did not reveal any of their identities. The album’s cover art, described as “a snapshot of a blue cloth swatch with the album title bleached in white,” was released later that day by Big Hit.

Two days later, RM shared additional photos on social media that hinted at the album’s overall mood.

The first photo was of a large room filled with wooden furniture and bathed in warm tones of light, while the second was an Instagram story featuring an image with the words “the last archive of my twenties” painted against a painted blue background.

On November 14, many hours before preorders began, he posted a sneak peek of the album’s outside packaging to Instagram.
