After beating American boxer Austin Trout on April 20, 2013, lvarez retained the ‘WBC light middleweight championship and won the ‘WBA (Unified)’ and the vacant ‘The Ring’ light middleweight titles.
The fight between “number one” light middleweight lvarez and “regular” world champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. took place on September 14, 2013, and was shown on Showtime. When it mattered most, Alvarez was unable to defend his light middleweight titles against the holders of the World Boxing Council (WBC) and The Ring. That was also the first career defeat for lvarez.
But the defeat did not dampen lvarez’s battling spirit, as he went on to win three fights against three different boxers until defeating Miguel Cotto of Puerto Rico on November 21, 2015, to claim the Ring, the lineal, and the vacant WBC middleweight belts. On May 7th, 2016, he successfully defended his belt against British boxer Amir Khan.
After the bout, he and his team promoted a rematch with Kazakhstan’s middleweight champion, Gennady Golovkin. On May 18, 2016, lvarez relinquished his “WBC” title, and the organisation promptly bestowed it upon Golovkin.
Next, Alvarez moved back down to light middleweight, where he would go on to defeat fellow British boxer, Liam Smith, for the “WBO” title on September 17, the same year. On September 16, 2017, lvarez and Golovkin fought for the “WBA (Super),” “IBF,” and the vacant lineal middleweight belts, but the fight ended in a split draw.
lvarez, however, retained his “The Ring” middleweight title. On September 15, 2018, lvarez defeated Golovkin in a close fight for the ‘WBA (Super),’ ‘WBC,’ ‘The Ring,’ and lineal middleweight crowns. Fans, the media, and boxing experts all continued to argue over the outcome of the fight.
‘DAZN’ stated on October 17 that they had struck a 5-year, $365 million deal with lvarez to air his next 11 fights in the United States. In the new agreement, ‘HBO’ will take the place of lvarez’s previous employer.
