In Guro-gu, Seoul, the Ramada Seoul Sindorim Hotel hosted the press conference for the tvN drama “Captivating the King” (authored by Kim Sun-deok, directed by Jo Nam-guk) in the afternoon of the 16th. Artists such as Jang Young-nam, Lee Kyu-hoi, Shin Se Kyung, Lee Shin-young, Park Ye-young, and writer Kim Sun-deok were in attendance.
Melodramatic historical drama “Captivating the King” tells the story of a woman’s tragic end as she becomes a spy to depose King Lee In, a powerful monarch with a pitiful soul. Shin Se-kyung plays Kang Hee-soo and Kang Mong-woo, her masculine disguise, while Jo Jung-suk plays King Lee In.
“I didn’t think of it as a fusion while writing,” explained Kim Sun-deok, the drama’s writer. Although it is based on the Joseon era and features fictional characters, I aimed to weave in several interpretations of Joseon era history that I find interesting. Fans of historical dramas would love it because they can watch each episode and think, “This one is from this era, and that one is from another era.”
When Jo Jung-suk returns to historical drama after an absence, he performs any other—that of a monarch. He expressed his belief that being an actor is a luxury and an advantage. At the beginning of the film “The Face Reader,” I wear rags, and acting in such clothes feels respectable now. ‘Captivating the King’ is the one that I believe will leave the greatest impression on people.

How Does the Romance Unfold Between them in ‘Captivating the King’?
An important part of “Captivating the King” is the romance that develops between the two performers. They fall in love for the first time in the beginning, but by the middle of the story, their love has turned into a tragic, uncertain love.
The sequences where Hee-soo first falls in love are more tender and lighthearted, according to Shin Se-kyung. When filming additional videos, I’ve always made note of such instances as memorable. All things considered, the scenes seem to have a sunny disposition. Deepening emotional struggle characterizes Hee-soo’s middle and later parts.
There’s never a dull moment, and her expressions and thoughts are always changing. I thoroughly enjoyed being able to concentrate on my performance due to the considerate environment on set. Jo Jung-suk was always a good time.
“It was challenging to act as Lee In,” Jo Jung-suk added. This isn’t a love story about pouring out my soul; it’s a narrative about a love story with a twist, about doubting one other. We put in a lot of time and effort into those sections, and I’m hoping people enjoy them.
In the melodrama, the two performers spoke about their chemistry. Their romantic chemistry was described by Jo Jung-suk as “11 out of 10,” and by Shin Se-kyung as “It’s a thousand out of a thousand points.”
Actors’ performances will round out “Captivating the King,” written by Kim Sun-deok, who is famous for works like “The King’s Man” that involve intense love stories. Though she was familiar with the tale and script, she found the experience of visiting the set to be “very interesting and made me happy” after finishing the script. Many K-dramas will be released in 2024, check them out.
I pray that the audience may experience the same joy. The actors gave outstanding performances, and I was quite impressed, so I think I am the first fan of this show. You can expect two excellent series finales: the first and the second. If people are looking for a feel-good romance, I think they will like them. On the 21st, at 9:20 PM KST, “Captivating the King” will make its debut.
