When we unleashed the greatest evil in human history, we didn’t mean to. At Comic-Con, Paramount Pictures pleased D&D fans with a panel and an official teaser for Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, their next feature picture. The film is a remake of the Dungeons & Dragons film trilogy (2000). Despite its $45 million production cost, the picture was a flop at the box office, bringing in just over $33 million worldwide.

It has received harsh criticism from critics because of its poor production value (particularly the cheap special effects) as well as its lackluster acting and directing. A made-for-TV sequel, D&D: Wrath of the Dragon God (2005), as well as a DVD release, D&D 3: The Book of Vile Darkness (2012), were both born from the original film’s success.

This revival was first mooted by Warner Bros. in 2013, but it was soon shot down by Hasbro due to Hasbro’s own D&D movie project with Universal Pictures. Hasbro sued Warner Bros. and eventually reached a settlement, allowing Warner Bros. to proceed. In the end, Hasbro relocated the project to Paramount and engaged John Francis Daley and Jonathon Goldstein to write and direct the film for a July 2021 release date. On March 3, 2023, Honor Among Thieves will finally be released after a two-year delay.

Readers of a particular age may recognize the name of Francis Daley: The terribly undervalued 1999-2000 television series Freaks and Geeks had his acting debut as the character Sam Weir. On Bones, he played FBI agent Lance Sweets. As a result of his time on the show, he fell in love with D&D, and now he has the opportunity to direct a D&D film. Comic-Con crowds in Hall H heard him say this:

When I played a part on Freaks and Geeks, I played a geek who was a major D&D fan. Being the young method actor I was at the time, I chose to participate in a campaign with the rest of the cast and I was instantly smitten with the universe.

It’s not only a game for everybody who plays D&D, as you all know. In this short, we really attempted to capture that sensation you get when you play the game, and that’s what we were going for. There’s a sense of family and camaraderie that comes with overcoming challenges together as a group and not knowing what to anticipate. Despite the DM [dungeon master’s] displeasure, there are many things that he or she doesn’t know what will happen. In other words, that is what we sought to document. Our distinct sense of humour is another factor that makes us stand out in the fantasy genre.

The Forgotten Realms campaign is the setting for Honor Among Thieves. When a crew led by an odd group of adventurers sets out to steal something priceless, things go horribly wrong when they cross paths with the wrong people, according to the film’s official synopsis. Elgin, a bard played by Chris Pine, is a charming thief who admits in the trailer that, as a thief, one is bound to have a few enemies, and those foes sometimes decide to pursue revenge. In a voiceover, he admits, “The truth is, we helped the wrong guy steal the wrong thing.” “This was not what we intended when we set out on this mission. That will be fixed, however.”

It’s not going to be a simple task. Holga, a barbarian (Michelle Rodriguez), Xenk, a paladin (Regé-Jean Page), and Simon the Sorcerer will help him (Justice Smith). Sophie Lillis, a druid known as Doric, can shift into an owlbear, which is useful in combat. Elgin informs Doric, “I’m a planner.” “I’m a thinker. New plans are drawn up if the current one fails.” Added bonus: he’s proficient on the lute.

An incomplete clip from the film was shown at the Comic-Con presentation, showing the group searching for the Helmet of Destruction, which involves excavating bodies and questioning the victims. For a fantasy adventure film, fun and camp are key components of the trailer’s soundtrack, which is perfectly appropriate for Led Zeppelin. Despite Hugh Grant’s comparison to Monty Python, the film also has some of the corny irreverence of a film like A Knight’s Tale. I like a more upbeat and friendly tone over an extremely stoic one.

This looks so stupid that it wraps around and becomes potentially fantastic,” wrote Lee Hutchinson, senior technology editor at Ars. The release date for Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves has been set for March 3, 2023. Several projects to accompany the film, including a spinoff TV series, are already in development.
