‘Death Note’ Season 2: Release Date, Cast, And Everything You Need To Know

A new chapter in the manga ‘Death Note’ gives us renewed hope for a second season of the anime.

After 15 years, ‘Death Note’ remains one of the most popular and lucrative anime series ever made.

Death Note‘ is based on Tsugumi Ohba‘s manga series of the same name, which he wrote and drew.

In Japan, the 37-episode anime television series adaption premiered in October 2006 and lasted until June 2007. On MyAnimeList, the anime received an incredible 8.63/10 out of 2,191,877 votes.

Fans have been waiting for the second season of the anime series for a long time. The company that created the hit anime, Madhouse, has been tight-lipped regarding the renewal. Is it finally going to happen? Let’s have a look.

Will There Be ‘Death Note’ Season 2?

We’ve been waiting a long time for the sequel to the original ‘Death Note‘ anime. There are several rumours that a sequel to ‘Death Note’ is already in the works. Unfortunately, there is still no official indication that the original anime would be followed by a sequel.

You might be asking why, despite the popularity of the first anime, Madhouse took so long to make a sequel. The paucity of the source material is one of the key factors. The anime is based on a manga with 108 chapters collected in 12 tank volumes. The source material has already been exhausted by the anime adaptation.

There is, however, new hope for fans!

A standalone ‘Death Note: Special One-Shot,’ written by Ohba and drawn by Obata, was released in February 2020. The standalone was set ten years after the events of Kira and told a whole new Death Note story. It could be a possible source of material for a follow-up anime.

When Will ‘Death Note’ Season 2 Release?

As successful as “Death Note” is as a property, it appears that its run as an anime is coming to an end – at least for the time being. As many anime fans are likely aware, series often receive new seasons years after their previous release, so you never know what will happen.

The original anime series has been on the air for 14 years, and there has been no news from Madhouse Animation regarding a second season being approved, but it hasn’t been cancelled either.

Because Season 1 of “Death Note” covers the majority of the manga series’ narrative, a second season would have to be inspired by something new, most likely with an entirely new storyline and primary characters.

In the United States, “Death Note” aired on Adult Swim in 2017 and is now available to view on a variety of platforms.

Even with all of these forces in play, the anime’s status has remained unknown for nearly a decade. It’s impossible to say whether or not there will be future episodes of “Death Note” at this time.

What Is The Possible Plot Of Death Note’ Season 2?

Season 2 of ‘Death Note’ has yet to be confirmed. Until we have an official announcement, we won’t know anything about the plot. However, our best estimate is that ‘Death Note: Special One-Shot’ will be used in the second season. If that happens, we can expect a time jump in season 2 with a completely new plot and antagonist.

The first adaption tells the narrative of Light Yagami, who is bored in the Shinigami world and is handed a notebook dubbed the ‘Death Note’ by Shinigami Ryuk. Light chooses to utilise the ‘Death Note’ to purge the world of evil, killing criminal after criminal.

‘Death Note: Special One-Shot,’ new possible source material for season 2, sees Ryuk return to the human realm. He approaches Minoru Tanaka, a bright middle-school kid, and presents him with the ‘Death Note.’

Following the Kira tragedy ten years ago, the world has already put in place more preventative measures. The following is a synopsis:

When the Shinigami Ryuk returns to Earth more than ten years after his last visit, he gives the Death Note to the top-scoring student in Japan, hoping that he will follow in Light Yagami’s footsteps. He is surprised when Minoru Tanaka returns the notebook and asks him to return in two years’ time. Now a high school student, Minoru accepts the notebook from Ryuk, but he has no plans to use it himself. With the Shinigami’s help, and his own ingenuity, he auctions it off anonymously as his actions are followed and predicted by Near. The United States of America buys it for a sum that leaves every Japanese citizen under the age of 60 set for life, but the King of Death creates a new rule of the Death Note that thwarts Minoru and the U.S. President’s plans.

What characters will feature in Season 2 of Death Note?

Because any prospective “Death Note” prequel or sequel would have to do without Light (Mamoru Miyano/Brad Swaile) and L (Kappei Yamaguchi/Alessandro Juliani) as primary characters (see below), only a small number of characters and their original voice actors are likely to be asked back.

The immortal Ryuk, portrayed by Shidô Nakamura in the original Japanese language version of the anime and Brian Drummond in the English dub, is one of the most likely characters to return (per IMDb).

Near, played by Noriko Hidaka in the original and Cathy Weseluck in the dubbed version, and Mello, played by Nozomu Sasaki in the original and David Robert Moore in the English dub, are also alive and well.

A sequel anime might feature an entirely new cast of characters, or it could focus on any of the original season’s living characters.

At least one prequel manga and a sequel manga have previously done so, with Mello narrating “Death Note: Another Note – The Los Angeles BB Murder Cases” and Ryuk and Near prominently featured in “Death Note: The a-Kira Story.”

Is There A Death Note Prequel?

In collaboration with manga creator Tsugumi Ohba, Nisio Isin has written a prequel novel to ‘Death Note.’ ‘Death Note Another Note: The Los Angeles BB Murder Cases,’ is the title of the book.

It follows Mello, the “possible successor to L,” as he recalls his time working with Naomi Misora, a renowned detective and FBI agent, to stop a serial killer.
