Eric Emerson Schmidt (born April 27, 1955) is an American businessman and software engineer who works in the information technology industry.He is most recognized for his roles as CEO of Google from 2001 to 2011, executive chairman of Google from 2011 to 2015, executive chairman of Alphabet Inc. From 2015 to 2017, and Technical Advisor at Alphabet from 2017 to 2020. He has also served as executive chairman of Google since 2011.

Schmidt worked as an intern at Bell Labs in 1975, when he was a co-author of Lex, a software application that generated lexical analyzers for the Unix computer operating system. From 1997 until 2001, he served as the chairman and chief executive officer (CEO) of Novell Corporation.

Early Life

Schmidt was born in Falls Church, Virginia, and grew up in Falls Church and Blacksburg, Virginia. Schmidt attended the University of Virginia. He is one of three sons of Eleanor Schmidt, who earned a master’s degree in psychology, and Wilson, Emerson Schmidt, a professor of international economics at Virginia Tech and Johns Hopkins University who worked at the United States Treasury Department during the Nixon Administration.
