What is Special in Felix Stray Kids?

Felix Stray Kids: JYP Entertainment’s 2017 reality show Stray Kids served as the catalyst for the formation of the South Korean boy band Stray Kids. Bang Chan, Lee Know, Changbin, Hyunjin, Han, Felix, Seungmin, and I.N. are the band’s eight members.

In October 2019, when the group was still a full nine members strong, member Woojin left for unknown personal reasons. Mixtape, Stray Kids’ pre-first EP, was published in January of 2018, while the band’s debut EP, I Am Not, was released on March 25.

The members of the band, not JYP Entertainment, came up with the moniker “Stray Kids.” Its meaning has shifted from that of a child who has become disoriented and now wants only to follow his or her dreams to that of a group of people who have found a way to break out of their routine and pursue something extraordinary together.

Stray Kids History

2017–2018: Formation, debut and I Am series

To promote a male idol debut project, JYP Entertainment (JYPE) launched a new reality survival show in August 2017. The show’s title, Stray Kids, was announced alongside additional details and teasers over the next two months.

The first music video for Stray Kids’ song “Hellevator” premiered on JYPE on October 17 before being made available as a digital single. Two original cast members, Lee Know and Felix, were reinstated to the group’s final nine-person roster.

2019: Clé series and Woojin’s departure

With the Unveil Tour “I Am…”, Stray Kids kicked off the year in the Asia-Pacific region on January 19 in Bangkok. Also in March, the group promoted their new album with a tour that stopped in Busan, Daejeon, and Incheon before concluding in Seoul at Olympic Park on April 20.

As a way to celebrate the one-year anniversary of Stray Kids’ debut, the agency announced on March 5 that the group would make their third comeback on March 25, 2019, with the publication of their fourth EP Clé 1: Miroh.

On April 4th, with the album’s first track “Miroh,” the band won their first music competition. In between the North American and European legs of their first world tour, on June 19, they dropped their debut special album Clé 2: Yellow Wood, along with the lead track “Side Effects” (Korean: ).

On October 9, Stray Kids released a digital song named “Double Knot” and announced their District 9 Unlock World Tour, which would kick off with two gigs at Olympic Hall in Seoul, South Korea on November 23 and 24.

Originally set to drop on November 25, their fifth EP Clé: Levanter was delayed after JYPE revealed on October 28 that member Woojin had quit the group due to personal reasons. The band’s first song as an eight-piece, “Astronaut,” and its accompanying music video were released on November 13, with Cle: Levanter following on December 9.

2020: Japanese debut, 生 series and All In

“Top” and “Slump,” both by the Stray Kids, were used as the show’s anthems. On January 24, Stray Kids released digital singles for the first time in English for “Double Knot” and “Levanter,” titled Step Out of Clé, alongside a live performance video for “Double Knot.”

On March 18, they made their official debut in Japan via Epic Records Japan with the release of the compilation album SKZ2020, which featured new recordings of previous songs as well as Japanese adaptations of “My Pace,” “Double Knot,” and “Levanter.”

On March 26, the band dropped their second digital single as part of the Mixtape Project, titled “Mixtape: On Track.” “Top” and “Slump” by Stray Kids were released as Japanese singles on June 3. The former was featured in the anime Tower of God, with the Korean and English versions of the theme song debuting on May 13 and 20, respectively.

The song debuted at number one on the Oricon Singles Chart, making them only the fourth male foreign artist (after Jang Keun-suk, Exo, and iKon) to achieve such a feat.

2021: Kingdom: Legendary War and Noeasy

BtoB, iKon, and SF9 were later confirmed to participate in the first season of the Mnet boy group competition show Kingdom: Legendary War, which was announced to feature Stray Kids, Ateez, and The Boyz at the 2020 Mnet Asian Music Awards.

For the last phase of the competition, the group released a song on May 28, 2021, titled “Wolfgang,” which peaked at number 138 on the main Gaon Digital Chart. After their victory on June 3, they were awarded their own reality show and a special episode during Kingdom Week to promote their comeback.

2022–present: Oddinary, Circus and Maxident

As part of JYP’s strategic cooperation with Republic Records, the label announced on February 10, 2022, that Stray Kids had signed with them to promote their music in the United States alongside Itzy.

The group’s second fan meetup, titled 2nd #LoveStay ‘SKZ’s Chocolate Factory,’ took place at Olympic Hall on February 12 and 13, and the second day of the event was televised via Beyond Live. The band Stray Kids dropped their sixth EP, titled Oddinary, on March 18.

Over 1.5 million copies of the EP were sold in March, propelling it to the top of the charts in South Korea, Finland, Poland, and the United States. It was Stray Kids’ debut release and charted on the UK Albums Chart and the Billboard 200.

As a result, they joined BTS and SuperM as the other two Korean acts to ever top the chart. The group’s debut track, “Maniac,” peaked at #98 on the UK Singles Chart and #19 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100.
