Golden Kamuy Manga Takes off with Live-Action Film Project

On Tuesday, the wraparound jacket band on Golden Kamuy Manga volume 29 announced that the manga was getting a live-action film adaptation. Viz Media will release the manga in English, as described in the first volume:

“In the early twentieth century, Russo-Japanese War veteran Saichi ‘Immortal’ Sugimoto scratches out a meager existence during the postwar gold rush in the wilderness of Hokkaido. When he stumbles across a map to a fortune in hidden Ainu gold, he sets off on a treacherous quest to find it.

But Sugimoto is not the only interested party, and everyone who knows about the gold will kill to possess it! Faced with the harsh conditions of the northern wilderness, ruthless criminals, and rogue Japanese soldiers, Sugimoto will need all his skills and luck—and the help of an Ainu girl named Asirpa—to survive.”

The Golden Kamuy Manga was launched by Noda in 2014, and it will end with its 314th chapter on April 28. On December 17, Shueisha published the 28th volume of the manga, marking the end of the manga’s final arc. Shueisha will release the 30th and final volume of the manga on June 17 and on July 19.

As the series aired in Japan, Crunchyroll streamed it with subtitles in English, while Funimation streamed it with an English dub. Season two of the Golden Kamuy Manga show premiered in October 2018. Episodes of the third season were scheduled to air in October 2020. October marks the premiere of the fourth season.

In September 2018, the Golden Kamuy Manga’s 15th compiled book volume was released with an anime DVD of the manga’s Barato arc. The manga’s 17th volume was released in March 2019, along with an anime DVD.

With the 19th volume of the manga, an original anime video (OVA) for the Monster arc was released in September 2019. With the 23rd volume, a fourth OVA was released adapting the “forbidden” story of Shiton Animal Chronicles.
