Murray, aged 30, had withdrawn from the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial after the 16th hole of Friday’s second round in Fort Worth, Texas, citing illness, as reported by the PGA Tour.
In their statement, Grayson’s parents expressed their gratitude for the love and support they’ve received, stating, “We have so many questions that have no answers. But one. Was Grayson loved? The answer is yes… He was loved and he will be missed.”
In the midst of their sorrow, they expressed gratitude towards the PGA Tour and the broader golfing community for the overwhelming support they received during this challenging time. They appealed for privacy as they navigated through the pain of their tragic loss and encouraged everyone to honor Grayson’s memory by promoting kindness towards one another, suggesting that such a legacy would be the greatest tribute they could hope for.
During the Colonial tournament on Sunday, many players wore black-and-red pins on their caps as a tribute to Murray, reflecting the colors of his beloved NHL team, the Carolina Hurricanes.
Reflecting on the difficulty of competing amidst such emotional turmoil, Scottie Scheffler, who finished tied for second at Colonial, acknowledged the sentiment expressed by Murray’s parents, affirming that continuing the tournament was a fitting tribute to Murray’s spirit.
Murray had previously opened up about his struggles with alcohol and mental health, recounting how he used to turn to alcohol during tournament weeks as a rookie, driven by a sense of invincibility despite recognizing his talent. However, he experienced a profound transformation this year, highlighted by his victory at the Sony Open, where he clinched the title with a remarkable 40-foot putt after hitting a wedge to 3 feet for birdie on the final hole.
In a poignant reflection in January, Murray emphasized the significant journey he had undertaken since his struggles with alcohol, crediting his current success to his decision to prioritize his well-being and sobriety.
Additionally, Murray achieved success early in his PGA Tour career, winning the Barbasol Championship as a 22-year-old rookie in 2017.
Ranked No. 58 in the world, Murray’s recent performances included a tie for 43rd in the PGA Championship at Valhalla and making the cut in his debut at the Masters, where he finished 51st. He was also slated to compete in the upcoming U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2.
Hailing from North Carolina, Murray was renowned as one of the country’s most promising junior golfers, boasting a remarkable record of three consecutive victories at the esteemed Junior World Championship in San Diego and earning the prestigious Arnold Palmer Scholarship at Wake Forest University.
