Hard Cell Plot
Catherine Tate’s Hard Cell straddles the line between satire and serious discussion of the criminal justice system. HMP Woldsley, a fictitious women’s jail, serves as the setting for the comedy Hard Cell. A novelist and a creative thinker. Her roles range from the Governor, Laura Willis, who believes in the power of art to aid in rehabilitation, to Big Viv, the incarcerated psychopath. For six weeks, Cheryl Fergison directs the inmates to perform a musical directed by the former EastEnders star. As they find their voices, gain confidence, and strengthen their friendships, an eclectic group of ladies gets together for rehearsals. It’s easy to laugh at Hard Cell’s humor, but the film also manages to make you think about the realities of prison life.
“A documentary team accompanies the inmates and employees at HMP Woldsley, documenting the penitentiary system at its cruel and funny best.”Kristian Smith, the show’s executive producer, adds: “As a team, we can’t wait to share the inside of HMP Woldsley with Netflix viewers, where Catherine Tate’s fantastical sculptures are housed. A British women’s jail prison is depicted in this series, which is both humorous and heartbreaking at the same time.”
