A member of an idol group who tried to avoid active military service by claiming to have an intellectual handicap was given a probationary term. On January 17th, KST, legal authorities said that Mr. Ahn, 32, was sentenced to one year in prison and given two years of probation on charges of breaking the Military Service Act. On top of that, he must perform 80 hours of volunteer work.
Multiple factors were considered in reaching this sentencing decision by the Criminal Division 9 of the Seoul Northern District Court. The fact that this was Mr. Ahn’s first transgression, his repentance, and his promise to do his future military duty were all factors that were considered.

In 2011 and 2017, Mr. Ahn was previously determined to be eligible for class 1 and class 2 active duty service, respectively. He was accused of trying to get out of his military service obligations while he was working with an idol group. He presented the Military Manpower Administration with a diagnosis of intellectual impairment in May 2020.
Before this, beginning in October 2019, Mr. Ahn had spent around seven months receiving treatment at a Seoul hospital. It was during this period that he allegedly pretended to have mental health issues or cognitive dysfunction on extensive psychological exams by giving inflated or skewed answers. Severe despair, suicidal thoughts, unexplained heart palpitations, and trouble breathing were among the symptoms that Mr. Ahn had reported to the doctor.

The medical assessments determined that Mr. Ahn had a “mild intellectual disability” and qualified him for level 4 social welfare worker conscription, according to a certificate he received from the hospital. The medical certificate went on to say that for at least a year, the patient should be under mental monitoring and prescribed medication.
