247Sports.com listed Johnson as the 13th-best player in the 2018 class and as a five-star recruit. Along with recruits Tyler Herro, E. J. Montgomery, Ashton Hagans, and Immanuel Quickley, he committed to play basketball at the University of Kentucky.
Johnson shot 38.1 percent from beyond the arc and 46.1 percent from the field as a freshman, averaging 13.5 points and 5.9 rebounds a game. On February 16, 2019, he scored 19 points in a victory over Tennessee, which was ranked first. Against Auburn, Johnson recorded a career-high 17 rebounds. When Did Keldon Johnson Join the San Antonio Spurs?
In the 2019 NBA Draft, Johnson was chosen by the San Antonio Spurs with the 29th overall choice on June 20, 2019. In a 2018 trade that transferred Spurs small forward Kawhi Leonard to the Toronto Raptors in exchange for draft picks, center Jakob Pöltl and shooting guard DeMar DeRozan, the Spurs acquired the draft pick that was used to select Johnson.
Later, Johnson was added to the San Antonio Spurs roster for the Vivint Arena-hosted 2019 NBA Summer League. On July 1, 2019, Johnson signed a contract with the Spurs. Johnson’s first NBA G League assignment was to the Austin Spurs, the Spurs’ affiliate team, on October 30, 2019.

On November 22, 2019, Johnson played two minutes in his NBA debut against the Philadelphia 76ers, a team that lost 115–104. On August 11, 2020, Johnson recorded a season-high 24 points, 11 rebounds, and three assists in a 123-105 victory over the Houston Rockets.
In a 106-98 victory over the Brooklyn Nets on January 17, 2023, Johnson recorded a career-high 36 points, 11 rebounds, and one assist. Johnson and the Spurs agreed to a four-year, $80 million rookie scale contract extension on July 18, 2022.
Johnson scored 27 points and forced a crucial Kevin Durant steal, which resulted in the game-winning basket, as the Phoenix Suns were defeated 115–114 on October 31, 2023.
