Jack Antonoff Early Life
Antonoff’s birthday is March 31st, which is when he was born in Bergenfield, New Jersey. He is the middle child of Rick and Shira (Wall) Antonoff’s three kids. He’s the younger brother of Rachel Antonoff and also a fashion designer. Sarah Antonoff, Antonoff’s younger sister, went away from brain cancer when she was 13 years old and he was a senior in high school.
According to Jack, “… my whole career has been revisiting that through a different lens,” indicating the profound effect it had on him. His childhood homes were in New Milford and Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey, and he attended Solomon Schechter Day School in Bergen County throughout his formative years.

Together with his sister, he took the subway into Manhattan so that they could both attend high school at the Professional Children’s School. When he was a student in high school in November 1998, he and a couple of his elementary school friends formed the punk rock band Outline. They released their self-titled EP on a friend’s label, Lifetime Records, in January of 2000.
Vocals were handled by Antonoff until the turn of the millennium when Eddie Wright was brought in. With Wright on board, they laid down six tracks that would become their 6 Song Demo, released that summer. You may also read Emma Grede
The album A Boy Can Dream was released in July 2001 through Triple Crown Records. Antonoff and his Outline bandmate, both then 15 years old, used a do-it-yourself concert tour guide to play shows throughout the country when they toured as teenagers in Antonoff’s parents’ minivan.
Jack Antonoff Career
Antonoff and his friend Scott Irby-Ranniar formed Steel Train in 2002 with Matthias Gruber on drums. Antonoff was the band’s main vocalist. In time, they were able to convince Evan Winiker and Matthew Goldman, formerly of Random Task, to drop out of school and become full-time members of the new outfit.
A recording contract with Drive-Thru Records was negotiated by Steel Train. Antonoff has stated that he will bring the same grassroots approach to his future projects that made the group so popular at jam band festivals. After being approached to join a new band by friends Nate Ruess and Andrew Dost in 2008, Antonoff agreed to do so.
Antonoff was the former lead singer of the band Format. Antonoff was already well-known to both Ruess and Dost because their previous bands had toured together. The debut album of the young band, titled Aim, and Ignite, was released that same year. Some Nights (2012), Fun’s second studio album, featured the top-charting single “We Are Young” (featuring Janelle Monae).

Antonoff worked alongside Ruess, Dost, and Jeff Bhasker on the song’s composition. And then, in September of 2013 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada for the iHeartRadio Music Festival, Fun played alongside their heroes, Queen. Practice on Brian May’s guitar was the “weirdest sensation ever,” according to Antonoff.
The band followed that up in December 2013 with a free six-song EP titled Before Shane Went to Bangkok: Fun Live in the USA. Antonoff’s Bleachers performances took place in 2014. Antonoff introduced Bleachers as a solo effort in February 2014.
According to Antonoff, the idea had been brewing for around ten years, and both the “disconnected, darker side” of suburban youth and John Hughes films—”linked to a time when big songs were great songs”—were inspirations for the moniker. Antonoff penned the bulk of the songs for Bleachers’ debut album on his laptop in hotel rooms during a global tour with Fun.
Jack Antonoff Personal Life
In early 2013, Antonoff relocated from the Upper West Side of New York City to the house where he was raised, leaving behind his sister Rachel. His new girlfriend, Lena Dunham, was located in Brooklyn Heights, so he followed her there. It was finalized in January 2018. He and Dunham’s flat in Brooklyn Heights, where he has a recording studio, is still his primary residence as of the end of 2019.
Actress Margaret Qualley is engaged to musician Antonoff. Antonoff has been open about his struggles with mental health issues like depression, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. He notes that hearing about the depressive experiences of others made him feel “much less afraid” and “not better, but not alone.”
During the month of June 2014, Antonoff was visiting both a therapist and a psychopharmacologist, in addition to taking anti-anxiety medication. Since contracting pneumonia in 2011 while recording an album with his band Fun, he has developed a severe phobia of disease and germs.
Jack and Taylor met at the 2012 MTV European Music Awards, where they bonded about their feelings toward award shows and their love for Yazoo. As they ran into each other at more award shows, they started hanging out.
