Liotta is best recognized for his portrayal of Henry Hill in Martin Scorsese’s 1980 mafia thriller “Goodfellas,” in which he co-starred with Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci. “I was terribly grieved to hear of Ray’s passing,” De Niro stated on Thursday.

De Niro continued, “He was way too young to have left us.” “Rest in peace, he.” In addition to “Field of Dreams,” Liotta has been in a number of television shows, including “Shades of Blue” and an episode of “ER,” for which he won an Emmy in 2005 for outstanding guest actor in a drama series.

Kevin Costner, Liotta’s “Fields of Dreams” co-star, wrote, “Devastated to hear the news of Ray Liotta’s demise.” “In my heart, he’ll always be ‘Shoeless Joe Jackson,’ despite his amazing legacy. What happened in the movie at that point was true. That stunt was given to us by God. Ray is now in the hands of God.”

Liotta has recently been in a number of notable movie pictures, including “Marriage Story,” “Killing Them Softly,” “The Place Beyond the Pines,” and “The Many Saints of Newark,” a prequel to “The Sopranos.”

“This is a tremendous, unexpected shock,” said David Chase, the creator of “The Sopranos” and the prequel’s writer and producer. “He constructed two distinct personas, each of whom delivered outstanding performances. Ray was also a very nice and funny guy. A truly outstanding performer. We all thought it was a stroke of luck that he was in that film.”
