Early life Of Jerry Lewis

Lewis was born Joseph Levitch on March 16, 1926, to a Jewish family in Newark, New Jersey. Daniel “Danny” Levitch (1902–1980), a master of ceremonies and vaudevillian who performed under the stage name Danny Lewis, and Rachael “Rae” Levitch (née Brodsky; 1903–1983), a WOR radio pianist and Danny’s music director, both came to the United States from the Russian Empire to New York.

Lewis stated in his 1982 autobiography that his birth name was Joseph, after his maternal grandfather, however his birth certificate contradicts this assertion. He was referred to as Jerome in the 1930 and 1940 US censuses.

Lewis stated that he stopped using the names Joseph and Joey as an adult to prevent confusion with Joe E. Lewis and Joe Louis.

His birthplace has also been disputed, with biographer Shawn Levy stating he was born at Clinton Private Hospital and others claiming he was born at Newark Beth Israel Hospital. Other assertions about his early life clash with family members’ testimonies, cemetery records, and vital documents.

Even when he was a teenager, he was a “character” in his area, going into kitchens to steal fried chicken and pies. In tenth grade, he dropped out of Irvington High School.
