Jerry Mathers, the son of Norm and Marilyn Mathers, entered the world on June 2, 1948, in Sioux City, Iowa. His father worked as a high school principal and afterward as an administrator for a Los Angeles school system. Mathers was born and raised in the Los Angeles suburb of Rock Rapids.

His younger brother Jimmy Mathers and sister Susie Mathers McSweeney also had acting careers as kids. When Mathers was just two years old, he starred in an advertisement for a major retail chain. He starred in an ad for PET milk with fellow actor and comedian Ed Wynn. Since then, he’s been able to land parts in movies and TV shows thanks to this breakthrough.

Jerry Mathers’s film career began when he was just four years old. Starting in 1952 with “Son of Paleface,” he went on to star in “Men of the Fighting Lady” and “This Is My Love” in 1954. In 1955, he was in both “The Seven Little Foys” and “The Trouble with Harry,” directed by Alfred Hitchcock. In the 1956 movie “That Certain Feeling,” he portrayed the character of Norman Taylor.

His big break came in 1957, when he was cast as Beaver on the hit TV series Leave It to Beaver. He made history by being the first child actor to receive royalties from a TV show’s merchandise sales. Merchandise from the exhibition continued to sell well after it had concluded. In addition to his role in “Leave It to Beaver,” he played Petey Atlas in the 1957 picture “The Shadow on the Window.” The 1958 movie “The Deep Six” portrayed Steve Innes.

Both “Don’t ‘Cha Cry” and “Wind-Up Toy” were recorded by him in 1962, right as the final season of “Leave It to Beaver” was airing. The conclusion of their career marked the beginning of his hiatus from acting, and he spent the next several years at Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, California. During this time, he established the band Beaver and the Trappers.

He joined the Air Force Reserve in his junior year of high school and stayed on until graduating in 1967. After some time, he was promoted to sergeant. When the original ensemble reunited for a television movie, “Still the Beaver,” in 1983, he was there to play Beaver Cleaver again.

A sequel series of the same name premiered on television after the original film. Originally airing on the Disney Channel, the show was rebranded as “The New Leave It to Beaver” when it moved to TBS. In the Bonnie Lythgoe-directed pantomime “Cinderella,” Jerry Mathers portrayed the role of Baron Hardup.

Simply put, it was a comedy and music show by a theatrical production. When a professional British pantomime came to the United States, he was the first and only actor to play the lead role.

In June 2007, he made his Broadway debut at the Neil Simon Theatre with the musical Hairspray. Both the film “Will to Power” and the TV drama “Mother Goose Parade,” directed by Jillian Hanson-Cox, featured him as Mr. Simpson in 2008.
