Reeves is back in John Wick 4 The New Generation

At CinemaCon, the first look at John Wick: Chapter 4 featured a return of Keanu Reeves in more heart-pounding action scenes. Chapter 4 is once again directed by Chad Stahelski, who has directed all of the John Wick films to date (along with David Leitch for the first one).

There are some familiar faces, including Keanu Reeves and the aforementioned Ian McShane, Lance Reddick, and Laurence Fishburne, in the new film, as well as some new ones in the form of Donnie Yen, Scott Adkins, Hiroyuki Sanada, Bill Skarsgard, and Rina Sawayama, who all play supporting roles.

John Wick’s first three films have taken place over the course of approximately 20 days. In the first episode, Russian mobsters kidnap Wick’s dog and steal his car, forcing him to come out of retirement.

This sets off a series of events that culminated in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, which left the series on an extremely suspenseful cliffhanger. When The High Table (the assassin guild’s ruling elite) invades the assassin hotel The Continental, Wick (McShane) is betrayed by Winston, shot, and left for dead.

Fisherman’s Bowery King, who plays Fishburne’s Bowery King, accepts Wick’s offer to work with him to exact revenge. Lionsgate debuted new footage from John Wick: Chapter 4 during its CinemaCon presentation.

In John Wick: Chapter 4, Reeves returns as the resourceful and highly lethal titular character, who is now on a mission of revenge following the vicious betrayal at the conclusion of John Wick: Chapter 3.

A lot of “samurai action” was shown in the trailer, including the first time Keanu Reeves uses nun chucks in the franchise. The footage was described as “colourful, bloody and brutal” (via Barry Hertz).

You can see him repeatedly beating an opponent over the head in the sequence. Fishburne says, “You are in the presence of the motherf*cking king!” in the trailer for Bowery King and Winston. Rohan Patel, via Rohan Patel, explains.

Fans are raving about the new footage in terms of action and the number of people killed (via Scott Menzel).

The John Wick 4 Poster

Even after The Hunger Games ended, John Wick has quickly become Lionsgate’s flagship franchise and has even spawned spinoff films such as a TV series focusing on The Continental’s early days and the feature film Ballerina, which will star Ana de Armas and be directed by Len Wiseman.

While Colin Woodell will portray Winston the boy, Mel Gibson will play a mysterious character known only as Cormac in the Continental series. In a three-night Lionsgate/Starz event series, the show serves as a prequel to the John Wick universe.

Reeves, on the other hand, is taking a break from his Baba Yaga suit for John Wick: Chapter 5. If there’s anything better than the prospect of a new John Wick movie, it’s the prospect of seeing Reeves use new weapons, like nun chucks.

It’s only natural that the addition of some new (and classic) weapons to Reeves’ arsenal will only heighten the excitement for the action-packed series’ upcoming episodes. There are still movies like John Wick: Chapter 4 out there that keep the straight-action genre’s name in the game, even though the superhero genre has taken over in the last decade.
