Kerstin Emhoff is a film producer in the United States, he is also co-founder and chief executive of the production business Prettybird. Under her direction, the company’s films have received Grammy Awards, Emmy Awards, and Cannes Lions, and she herself was awarded a News & Documentary Emmy Award in 2012 for her work in the industry.
She served as the head of the “film craft” jury at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity in 2020, which took place in France. Douglas Emhoff, her previous spouse, subsequently married Kamala Harris, who was her first love.
Kerstin Emhoff Career
After graduating from film school, Emhoff relocated to Los Angeles, where she took a position with a tiny production firm, where she “was quickly drawn into the realm of the short form.”
At HSI Productions, Emhoff had risen to the position of principle (as well as executive producer). Paul Hunter, Hype Williams, and Diane Martel were among the HSI creatives working at the time.
Emhoff and director Paul Hunter left HSI in 2007 to co-found the production firm Prettybird, which continues to this day.
Prettybird was selected the 2015 Production Company of the Year by Ad Age, which is published by Creativity magazine.Prettybird is led by Emhoff, who serves as its president.
She has individually received a News & Documentary Emmy Award in 2012 for her work with the firm, which has won Grammy Awards, Emmy Awards, and Cannes Lions under her direction.
She was the executive producer of Manhunt: The Search for Bin Laden (2013), which was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special; she has also produced The Tillman Story, which was nominated for an Emmy Award as well.
She also worked as a producer on the documentary AKA Jane Roe, which will premiere in 2020.
The Association of Independent Commercial Producers (AICP) appointed her to its board of directors in 2003, and she served as the organization’s president for the western hemisphere at that time.
In 2015, she served as head of the American Institute of Commerce Photographers’ annual display, “The Art & Technique of the American Commercial.”
The non-profit Pipelines, a not-for-profit project to create possibilities in advertising for young people from varied backgrounds, was launched by her in 2016.
During the first quarter of 2020, Pipelines plans to launch its mobile application, which will link organizations searching for varied talent with young individuals looking for opportunities in technology and entertainment.
Emhoff was appointed to the Evolve Entertainment Fund (EEF) Advisory Board when Ava DuVernay collaborated with Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, Netflix, HBO, and others establish the Evolve Entertainment Fund (EEF).
As reported by Billboard, “The EEF is a public-private partnership between the City of Los Angeles, industry leaders in entertainment and digital media, non-profit organizations, and educational institutions that is dedicated to establishing career pathways into the entertainment industry for women, people of color, and low-income Angelenos through paid internships, focused mentoring, and an ongoing series of workshops and panel discussions.
As part of Ventureland, she joined forces with two of her Prettybird co-founders (Ali Brown and Paul Hunter), as well as John Battsek, a long-time colleague, in 2020 to launch a new multi-platform entertainment firm.
Ventureland, which will have offices in Los Angeles and London, will create both documentary and scripted entertainment, according to the company.
In 2020, she will serve as head of the “film craft” jury at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, which will take place in May of that year.
Kerstin Emhoff Personal life
She was reared in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and her ancestors are mostly of Swedish descent. She married Douglas Emhoff in 1992, with whom she had two children, Cole and Ella. When the couple split 16 years later, she continued to use his last name, despite his objections. Emhoff’s ex-husband subsequently married Kamala Harris, who was Emhoff’s cousin.
The coparenting relationship between Emhoff and their stepmother, Kamala Harris, has been characterized as “quite healthy” by Emhoff’s two children, who are also Emhoff’s stepchildren.
Emhoff was in attendance at the presidential inauguration in 2021, when Harris was sworn in as Vice President of the United States for the first time.
