IU’s “Love Wins All” music video has gotten her into some hot water lately because of claims of ableism.
BTS’s V is now popular on social media due to his impressive acting beside IU and the music video featuring him was published yesterday to mixed reviews from K-netizens. Nevertheless, many feel the MV’s plot and characters are biased against able-bodied individuals.
In the music video, the visually impaired characters IU and V portray disabled people as non-disabled couples who experience love via the use of camcorders. Some reviewers have pointed out that IU and V are objectified because they are disabled and that a society free of prejudice and bigotry at the end of MV is just the elimination of impairments. Love Wins All music video has gained so many views on YouTube in just 2 days.
Others have argued that it is fundamentally prejudiced to attribute a person’s suffering from discrimination solely to their disability. This scandal has brought to light IU’s past interactions with wheelchair-using actor Ha Ji Sung.
While Ha Ji Sung was worried about how he would manage to get everyone in the group shot while using his wheelchair, he found encouragement in IU’s suggestion that he bring a camera to the ‘Baeksang Arts Awards celebration.
Disabled actors’ portrayal in IU’s music video sparked remarks such as, “You shouldn’t jump to conclusions based on the interpretation of a music video,” “You can’t say IU is belittling the disabled after looking at her actual actions,” and “It’s unfortunate the music video is being overly interpreted.”
Famous model, stylist, and alleged HYBE employee Nara Kim also happens to be an artist linked with Styled by Cheri Nara, so she naturally had to weigh in on the issue. The video’s depiction of people with disabilities and its perhaps exploitative storyline were issues that Nara, who identified as “bis*xual openly queer,” voiced her concerns about.
