Action-adventure video game Metroid Prime was created by Retro Studios and released by Nintendo for GameCube.  Metroid Prime, the series’ fifth main entry, is the first in the genre to feature 3D computer graphics and a first-person viewpoint. Nintendo refers to the game as a “first-person adventure” rather than a first-person shooter because exploration comes first and fighting comes second.

In November 2002, it was made available in North America; the following year, it did the same in Europe and Japan. The Game Boy Advance title Metroid Fusion, which was released by Nintendo the day before its North American release, marked the Metroid series’ eight-year sabbatical following Super Metroid (1994).

The Metroid Prime storyline, which occurs between the original Metroid and Metroid II: Return of Samus, begins with the game Metroid Prime.

Similar to earlier games in the series, Samus Aran, the series’ main character and bounty hunter, appears in Metroid Prime’s science fiction setting. Samus fights the Space Pirates and their biological experiments on the planet Tallon IV as the plot follows her.

The Austin, Texas-based Retro team worked together on the game with Nintendo staffers in Japan, including producers Kensuke Tanabe and Shigeru Miyamoto, the latter of whom came up with the idea when visiting Retro’s offices in 2000.

Over 2.8 million units of the game were sold worldwide, and it received international acclaim and commercial success. It is still one of the highest-rated games on Metacritic and has received several Game of the Year honors. It is recognized as one of the all-time best video games by many critics and players.

In 2009, an improved version was made available for the Wii in Japan as a standalone title and elsewhere as a part of the Metroid Prime: Trilogy collection. A standalone HD remastered version of the title was made available for the Nintendo Switch in February 2023.

Metroid Prime Remastered

A remastered version of the original Metroid Prime is coming to Nintendo Switch. The publisher revealed that the original game in the first-person reboot of the Metroid series would be made available on the eShop “later today” during a Nintendo Direct livestream. For $39.99, Metroid Prime Remastered is currently offered in the Nintendo Switch eShop.

Along with enhanced graphics, Metroid Prime Remastered will also feature dual-stick controls, which is a significant improvement over the first game in the legendary series. The remaster will also provide additional control scheme options in addition to a controlled setting that replicates the original game’s feel.

Despite hopes for a Metroid Prime trilogy re-release on the Switch, Nintendo did not reveal any similar intentions for the two Metroid Prime sequels. In 2002 and 2004, respectively, Metroid Prime and Metroid Prime 2: Echoes were first made available on GameCube.

These two Wii video games were followed in 2007 by Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. Later, Nintendo produced a Metroid Prime Trilogy collection for the Wii, modernizing the previous two games to accommodate widescreen, improved visuals, and motion controls.

Metroid Prime 4, the next installment in the series, is currently being created for the Nintendo Switch. Nintendo reopened Metroid Prime 4’s development in 2019 at Retro Studios, the team behind the original trilogy, as had been previously stated in 2017.

Metroid Dread, Samus Aran’s most recent journey, was made available on Switch in October 2021. We appreciated the game’s innovative take on the Metroid premise, as well as its unexpected approach to challenge and letting the player get lost, in Polygon’s review. “Dread reimagines the Metroid format with confidence and care, and it trusts the player to make leaps along the way.”

Metroid Prime Gameplay

Contrary to earlier games in the Metroid series, Metroid Prime is a 3D action-adventure game where players take control of Samus Aran, the series’ main character, from a first-person viewpoint. Morph Ball mode is only playable in the third-person.

The game’s gameplay entails solving puzzles to uncover secrets, jumping from platform to level, and shooting enemies with the aid of a “lock-on” mechanism that permits circle strafing while maintaining an enemy-targeted aim.

Samus must explore Tallon IV’s universe in pursuit of the twelve Chozo Artifacts that will clear the way to the Phazon meteor impact crater while also gathering power-ups that enable her to access new locations. Samus may explore volcanic zones because the Varia Suit, for instance, shields her armor from extreme heat. After a boss battle, you can get some goodies.

Items need to be collected in a precise order; for instance, players can’t reach some regions unless they find a specific Beam to unlock doors or find new munitions to defeat bosses. To find upgrades like ammunition packs and extra health, players are encouraged to explore.
