M. Night Shyamalan wrote, directed, and produced Old, a 2021 American thriller film. Sandcastle by Pierre Oscar Levy and Frederik Peeters, a Swiss graphic novel published in French, served as the inspiration for this film. Gáel Garcia Bernal, Vicky Krieps, Rufus Sewell, Alex Wolff, Thomasin McKenzie, Abbey Lee, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Ken Leung, Eliza Scanlen, Embeth Davidtz, and Emun Elliott make up the cast of this picture, which was directed by Pedro Almodóvar. On a deserted beach, a group of elderly people finds themselves aging rapidly.
After receiving Sandcastle as a Father’s Day gift in 2017, Shyamalan decided to turn it into a film. In September 2019, the filmmaker revealed a deal with Universal Pictures for the then-untitled project. During the COVID-19 pandemic in the Dominican Republic, Michael Gioulakis served as cinematographer for three months of filming. On July 19, 2021, Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City hosted the world premiere of Old, which was then distributed to the public on July 23, 2021, in the United States. With a worldwide total of $90.1 million, the picture was a financial success, despite only having an 18-million-dollar budget.
Guy and Prisca Cappa, a married couple, are in the process of divorcing. As a final family vacation, the couple brings their young children, Maddox and Trent, to a tropical resort. Guy and Prisca are given complimentary beverages at their hotel, and the children make friends with the resort manager’s nephew, Idlib. Maddox and Trent play a message decoding game with Idlib when their parents argue at night. The next morning the family is invited to a private beach by the manager, who also brings rapper “Mid-Sized Sedan” and a female companion, surgeon Charles, his wife Chrystal, their young daughter Kara, and Charles’s mother Agnes, as well as husband and wife duo Jarin and Patricia Carmichael. They are all guests of the manager. His Mid-Sized Sedan companion’s body has been found dead by Trent. After learning that Mid-Sized Sedan has hemophilia and has been having nosebleeds, Charles becomes suspicious.
Upon learning that their children are swiftly maturing into young adults and that Agnes has died, the families come to believe that the beach is aging them at a rate of a year every 30 minutes. In every family, there is at least one person who has a medical ailment. Attempting to leave will cause them to blackout. Charles injures Mid-Sized Sedan with a pocket knife in a fit of wrath, but it heals swiftly thanks to the group’s care and attention. Charles successfully removes Prisca’s stomach tumor once she develops it. The body of his friend has deteriorated in a matter of hours, to the dismay of the Mid-Size Sedan.
Kara and Trent’s relationship deteriorates as they grow older, and when they become sexual, Kara gives birth to a baby who dies shortly after birth. The journal of a former traveler is found by Trent and Maddox, along with evidence that they are being followed. Mid-Sized Sedan is killed by Charles’s growing illness as he seeks to depart. Among those who perish in this episode are Jarin (who drowns), Kara (who falls to her death), Patricia (who has a fatal epileptic seizure), and Chrystal (who dies of hypocalcemia). After an attack by Guy at night, Charles is stabbed by Prisca, who inflicts a severe blood infection that quickly kills him. Guy and Prisca make amends before passing away in different parts of the world.
Maddox and Trent, now middle-aged, build a sandcastle on the beach the next morning. Idlib gave them a secret message that Trent thinks is linked to an undersea coral passage. When he and his sister see a tunnel through the coral, they believe it will allow them to leave the beach without passing out. A resort staffer who has been keeping an eye on them says that they have all drowned after they appear to have failed to emerge from the water. His boss, who recounts an earlier incident in which one of the guests nearly escaped from the beach, announces that trial 73 is over.
Patients with medical issues are given experimental medications through the resort’s drinks, which turn out to be tainted with the results of clinical experiments being conducted by a research team behind the scenes. The researchers were able to complete the pharmacological testing in a single day since the beach naturally expedites the lives of the guests. Trent and Maddox, who had survived their underwater journey, arrive just as the researchers are luring a new group to the shore. They are able to bring the police to the resort using the notebook as evidence. Trent and Maddox return to their aunt’s house after the arrest of the researchers.

He likened it to a two-part episode of The Brady Bunch when an ancient tiki brings the group bad luck and causes Greg (Barry Williams) to get into a surfing accident because of the bad luck it brings. According to Josh Weiss, a writer for Syfy Wire, the teaser “certainly carries Shyamalan’s distinctive slow-boil intensity.” After a theatrical release poster and teaser were revealed on May 27, 2021, which Variety’s Antonio Ferme called “thrills and shivers,” Weis referred to it as “a reverse Benjamin Button situation that the characters need to rectify before they shrivel and die.” In July of that year, Empire magazine published an exclusive photograph from the film.
