A horrifying catastrophe occurred during the movie “Rust” production in 2021 when Alec Baldwin, who played the lead role, unintentionally shot and killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set while severely hurting director Joel Souza.
After the incident, playwright Mamie Mitchell sued Alec Baldwin and others in November 2021, saying they were negligent in maintaining the set’s safety. Baldwin, though, refuted the accusations. Baldwin noted that until many hours after the incident, he didn’t realize the rifle was loaded and murdered Hutchins and injured director Souza. The movie’s filming was therefore postponed.
Rust’s filming appeared interminable after the tragic on-set incident that claimed the life of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. Alec Baldwin’s pretend gun, used to shoot scenes for the Western, accidentally fired a live cartridge in October 2021.
Killing Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza as Hutchins was getting ready to begin production. No criminal charges have yet been brought against Baldwin or any other production crew members, even though an inquiry into the incident was started.
The estate of Halyna Hutchins had also brought a wrongful death claim against the filmmakers in February. At the time, Baldwin asserted that he had hoped to finish the movie as a tribute to Hutchins, but the litigation had prevented him from doing so.
A settlement was struck, according to a statement made on Wednesday by Hutchins’ widower, Matthew Hutchins. Now, with the complete approval of the estate, production is anticipated to resume in January.
“We have reached a settlement, subject to court approval, for our wrongful death case against the producers of Rust, including Alec Baldwin and Rust Movie Productions, LLC. As part of that settlement, our case will be dismissed,” Hutchins said, per Variety.
He added, “I have no interest in engaging in recriminations or attributing blame (to the producers or Mr. Baldwin). All of us believe Halyna’s death was a terrible accident. I am grateful that the producers and the entertainment community have come to pay tribute to Halyna’s final work.”
A separate statement from Baldwin’s attorney Luke Nikas also notes, “Throughout this difficult process, everyone has maintained the specific desire to do what is best for Halyna’s son. We are grateful to everyone who contributed to resolving this tragic and painful situation.”

The Rust Movie Will Be Finished
Matthew Hutchins will also join the project as an executive producer in addition to the settlement. Additionally, it is claimed that all of the “original principal players” intend to make a comeback. This will include the movie’s actors, like Alec Baldwin and Jensen Ackles, and director Joel Souza, who came dangerously close to dying when Halyna Hutchins’ bullet struck him.
“Those of us who were lucky enough to have spent time with Halyna knew her to be exceedingly talented, kind, creative, and a source of incredible positive energy,” Souza said of Hutchins and resuming work on Rust. “I only wish the world had gotten to know her under different circumstances, as it surely would have through her amazing work.”
The filmmaker added, “In my own attempts to heal, any decision to return to finish directing the film could only make sense for me if it was done with the involvement of Matt and the Hutchins family. Though certainly bittersweet, I am pleased that together, we will now complete what Halyna and I started. My every effort on this film will be devoted to honoring Halyna’s legacy and making her proud. It is a privilege to see this through on her behalf.”
