The second season of Shadow and Bone has begun filming. That’s correct; starting filming on Netflix’s blockbuster fantasy series has resumed, with principal photography taking place in Budapest, Hungary. And, if that wasn’t enough good news, we also know who will portray fan favorites Nikolai Lantsov and Wylan Van Eck in season 2. So the saints have a lot to be thankful for! Little was known about Shadow and Bone season 2 before this newest set of announcements. Sure, we’d heard rumors about when the Netflix show’s second season would begin production.
When new cast members would be announced, however, now that we have confirmation on both of these, we can start getting excited about Netflix’s TV adaption coming to our screens, particularly after the first season was so amazing. More information on Shadow and Bone season 2 can be found below, including probable narrative elements, returning cast members, a potential release date, and more. But be warned: from here on out, there will be Shadow and Bone season 1 spoiler, as well as probable future plot information based on our understanding of the books. Shadow And Bone Season 2 Released Date: 2023
Season 2 has yet to be given an official release date. We knew a second season would be unveiled during Netflix Geeked Week in June 2021. However, now that Shadow and Bone season 2 has begun production, we may speculate when the fantasy TV series will return to our screens. So, when can we expect Season 2 of Shadow and Bone? The show’s first season took four months to shoot, with principal photography between October 2019 and February 2020. Season 2 should wrap in May if the filming schedule for season 1 is followed.

However, due to the ongoing pandemic, additional reshoots, and a lengthy post-production phase, season 1 would not premiere until April 2021, a period of 14 months. If Season 2 suffers the same fate, the next batch of episodes may not be released until the summer of 2023. We’re hoping Shadow and Bone will return sooner rather than later. Fans of Leigh Bardugo’s book series and the TV program, on the other hand, will expect that season 2 is as fantastic as the first. We’re glad to wait a little longer for it if it means we get a better follow-up to the first season of the program — but we won’t complain if it comes sooner than we expect.

The cast of Shadow and Bone will be in attendance at Roster Con in Paris on January 22 and 23, so we may learn more about season 2’s narrative, characters, and shooting locations. When we know more, we’ll update this area.
Cast Of Shadow And Bone Season 2
The following is a complete list of season 2’s confirmed cast of characters, as well as the actors who will play them:
- Julian Kostov as Fedyor
- Kit Young as Jesper Fahey
- Amita Suman as Inej Ghafa
- Lewis Tan as Tolya Yul-Battar
- Jessie Mei Li as Alina Starkov
- Freddy Carter as Kaz Brekker
- Jack Wolfe as Wylan Hendriks
- Danielle Gilligan as Nina Zenik
- Patrick Gibson as Nikolai Lantsov
- Calahan Skogman as Matthias Helvar
- Sujaya Dasgupta as Zoya Nazyalensky
- Anna Leong Brophy as Tamar Kir-Battar
- Archie Renaux as Malyen “Mal” Oretsov
- Ben Barnes as General Kirigan/the Darkling
Alina and Mal will reprise their roles as Shadow and Bone’s main characters, while Kerrigan – who survived the battle in the Shadow Fold in the season 1 finale – will also return. The season 2 cast also includes Kaz, Jesper, and Inej. The Dregs’ tale (more on this below) will line up with Nina and Matthias’, as it did in the Six of Crows duology; thus, we should see that trio team up with the last couple. This was hinted at in the final episode of season 1, so expect them to band together like they do in the novels.
Wylan Hendriks (whose surname has been changed from ‘Van Eck’ for the TV program) is one of four new confirmed cast members who have made the transition from Bardugo’s book series to the live-action TV series. Wylan Van Eck joins the Dregs as a demolitions specialist for a task within Fjerdan’s military stronghold, the Ice Court, in the books. In season 2, Jack Wolfe (Inside No. 9, The Witcher) will play Wylan.
Nikolai Lantsov, another favorite fan character expected to debut in season 2, will be played by Irish actor Patrick Gibson (Tolkien, The Darkest Minds). In the novel, Nikolai assumes the alias Sturmhond and commands a pirate fleet that assists Ravka’s war effort. Nikolai becomes a crucial ally of Alina and Mal; therefore, his appearance in Netflix’s adaptation will be essential if the TV show’s plot in season 2 is mainly based on Siege and Storm.
Tolya Yul-Battar and Tamar Kir-Battar, twin twins, portrayed by Lewis Tan (Mortal Kombat) and Anna Leong Brophy (Traces), are the last two additions to Shadow and Bone’s second season. Today is a Grisha Heartrender and a member of Sturmhond’s pirate crew in the novels. On the other hand, Tamar is a Heartrender who was formerly a part of Sturmhond’s squad. The two also cross paths with Zoya in one of Shadow and Bone’s spin-off books, so anticipate tale aspects from that book to be integrated into season 2.
There’s no news yet on where Zoe Wanamaker’s Baghra from Season 1 will return. However, the remainder of the first season’s cast is expected to return, with each actor featured in the previous season 2 production announcement video.

Shadow And Bone Season 2 Trailer: Is There One?
There isn’t and won’t be for a long time. If primary filming starts soon, we may receive a teaser in late 2022, but there will be no teaser at all until then.
Shadow And Bone Season 2 Plot: What’s The Story About?
Season 2 will most likely pick up Siege and Storm, Six of Crows, and King of Scars left off. That’s based on the show’s returning cast members, new cast members, and what the season 1 conclusion hinted to. Following season 1, Alina and Mal went their separate ways to the Dregs. The second season will continue their adventure to new regions to keep Alina from Kerrigan’s grasp. That implies they’ll almost certainly run across Nikolai, but we’ll get to him later. Kerrigan has tapped into his Darkling abilities and produced new Fold monsters known as Nichevo’ya, as shown in the last episode of Season 1. Unlike the Volcra that live in the Fold, these creatures may travel in broad daylight, and they’re going to be difficult foes for Alina and Mal to vanquish.
In a similar vein to how season 1 incorporated the Dregs into Alina’s arc, Ben Barnes, who plays Kirigan/the Darkling in Netflix’s TV show, has expressed interest in seeing season 2 “steer off” from the story in the books (per Collider). It’s unclear whether season 2 will do so, but it’ll be a fascinating twist on the source material if it does. It would provide new content for existing fans, though some may object to the show’s potential deviation from the novels if it does.
Meanwhile, the Dregs are expected to join forces with Nina to liberate Matthias since the two, along with Wylan, are crucial to Kaz’s plot to save Bo Yul-Bayur. The Shu chemist and Fabrikator is the creator of a narcotic that Grisha finds addicting, but he is imprisoned at Fjerda’s Ice Court in Siege and Storm. The Ice Court’s ‘impossible heist’ perspective was previously used in Shadow and Bone season 1 for the Dregs’ original attempt to try and capture Alina; therefore, Bo’s rescue may be changed for the TV series.
Zoya should be followed by King of Scars, another adapted tale from a Grishaverse book. Zoya’s character is given a more significant position in Bardugo’s second duology, and aspects of the story from these novels may be included in the TV program, according to Bardugo’s teaser in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
With the addition of Lantsov, the show’s second season will feature his arc from Siege and Storm. In the books, Lantsov – a former king of Ravka who now goes by the alias Sturmhond – is hired by the Darkling to transport him through the True Sea to track down the Rosalie, a mythical dragon. Lantsov eventually joins forces with Alina and Mal, fighting alongside them to prevent the Darkling from carrying out his master plan. The TV show is expected to feature Lantsov’s origin story and some of his Siege and Storm character arcs.
Finally, the number of episodes in Season 2 has been revealed. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Shadow and Bone will return for a second season with an eight-episode run, which is excellent news for fans of the first season.
While the Grishaverse may not have the same cult following as other popular fantasy series like The Witcher, Harry Potter, or The Lord of the Rings, it still has a loyal fan base. Its fan base is expected to have swelled as well, thanks to Netflix’s adaptation, which has introduced the series to new audiences since its premiere in April 2021. Netflix’s rendition of the Grishaverse may go in various ways as well. Shadow and Bone, like the streamer’s developing Witcher-Verse, might lead to spin-offs that dive further into the larger world and are based on Bardugo’s extensive source material. In and around Shadow and Bone season 2, Netflix may go in various ways, whether it’s building on a pre-existing short narrative or developing wholly new material.
If the show continues to be a hit, Netflix may decide to produce different seasons and spin-offs. Shadow and Bone’s future may be bright if its second season pulls a significant audience again since the streaming giant has proved it would put trust in projects that yield robust watching statistics.
