Shantaram Season 2: Shantaram is an Apple TV+ original film based on the 2003 novel of the same name by Gregory David Roberts. In this drama, as in the book, a heroin addict and bank robber escapes from an Australian prison in the 1980s and looks for safety in Bombay. The fugitive and main character of the series is portrayed in this rendition by Sons of Anarchy actor Charlie Hunnam.
Eric Warren Singer (Top Gun: Maverick) and Steve Lightfoot are the show’s creators (Hannibal). When the wanted man, Lin Ford, arrives in Bombay, he becomes friends with a vivacious tour guide named Prabhu (Shubham Saraf). In this challenging city, this tour guide gets Lin food and shelter, and they rapidly become friends and form a business link.
While evading the law, Lin befriends numerous other criminals and grows deeper in love with them. There are various subplots, even though Lin’s search for forgiveness takes up most of the show. One plot includes two Italian pimps and their prostitute Lisa, while another involves two rival criminal bosses engaged in a land fight (Elektra Kilbey).
Despite receiving conflicting reviews, the series has a 56% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. IMDb gave the movie a 7.56 rating even though more people loved it. Because it had a lengthy runtime and far too many episodes for the plot it was attempting to depict, I found the show rather uninteresting.
Lin is painted as a tortured hero, rapidly growing tiresome and overused. Numerous weakly written characters in the show are likewise quite despicable and archetypal in their weaknesses and aimlessness. Prabhu, the comedy sidekick who shines in this otherwise gloomy movie, may offer a glimmer of hope.
Shantaram Season 2: Is it Renewing or Canceling?
Apple often avoids using the terrible word of the day—cancellation—by either renewing a series or designating it as a miniseries if they don’t see the need to create extra episodes. Contrary to Netflix and Prime Video, which have faced complaints from fans who wished their special attacks had been carried for a little longer, they have mostly escaped criticism in recent years due to their savvy tactics.
Currently, Shantaram is in an unpleasant situation due to the conflicting opinions from critics and the generally unimpressive reception from viewers. Even stranger things have happened (I’m looking at you, Surface). Apple might label this a one-off, limited series and call it a day. The series is a faithful reproduction of the first book, and there was a follow-up novel.
Therefore, more of this story can be told if the audience is interested. Although I’d be shocked if Shantaram was renewed for a second season, the companion novel The Mountain Shadow might convince the streaming service to reconsider. As always, if anything changes regarding the imminent renewal of Shantaram, we’ll let you know.
Shantaram Season 2: A Brief Overview
Before delving into the intricacies and rumors surrounding Season 2, let’s analyze the Season 1 story to understand the show’s premise better. Shantaram follows Lin Ford (Charlie Hunnam), an Australian heroin addict and criminal, while he serves time for a heist in an Australian prison in the 1980s. Lin escapes from prison and applies for refuge in Bombay, India (today called Mumbai), posing as a doctor.
But his old habits, addictions, and way of life all catch up with him when he quickly gets engaged in India’s criminal underworld, ultimately leading him to Afghanistan. He joins forces with a local crime lord at odds with Russian thugs.
Release Date of Shantaram Season 2
If you consider everything mentioned, I don’t see Shantaram Season 2 occurring, at least not anytime soon. Production on Season 1 lasted as long as seven years (or, at least, Hunnam was invested in the project personally for that long). Although numerous setbacks and adjustments to the creative team along the way extended the production, Season 2 is undoubtedly an exception to this rule.
Given that Hunnam will require at least two years to recover from his back injury, there is no chance that Shantaram will have a Season 2 before late 2024 or early 2025, and most likely much later. If it ever happens at all, that is.
The Storyline of Shantaram Season 2
If Shantaram Season 2 ever debuted, what would it be about? It’s tough to say where the Season 1 finale would start because it hasn’t yet aired. It would rely on how the first season is resolved and what issues it poses.
Nevertheless, one can assume that Season 2 will follow a similar trend, considering how closely the program seems to follow its inspiration. As a result, it appears likely that the sequel novel will be adapted for the upcoming action season.
The sequel, The Mountain Shadow, is set two years after the conclusion of the first book, Shantaram. After Lin loses Karla and Kaderbhai, the mafia leader who died in the Afghan mountains while battling Russian criminals, most of the action takes place in Bombay.
Later, Karla marries a Bombay-based media tycoon. To finish the last task Kaderbhai gives Lin, he sets off on a journey to find love, faith, and an escape from everything living while also earning the respect of a guru from the mountains.
Shantaram Season 2: Cast and Crew
If Season 2 of Shantaram were to be made, the entire cast and crew from Season 1 would most likely return, except the characters who left or passed away. I’ll try to keep any surprises a secret while naming the prominent cast members. The cast also features Faysal Bazzi as Abdullah, Sujaya Dasgupta as Kavita, Antonia Desplat as Karla, Elham Ehsas as Modena, Elektra Kilbey as Lisa, David Field as Wally Nightingale, Rachel Kamath as Parvati, Alexander Siddig as Khader Khan, and Gabrielle Scharnitzky as Madame Zhou. Charlie Hunnam plays the lead role in the film.
