The Best Anime Available On Netflix Right Now

The anime series on Netflix has had a great year so far. Additionally, the streamer’s internal changes only resulted in a slight reshuffling of release dates. There’s more good news as we head into the cooler months of the year, with a new feature and some cooling programs to look forward to. Starting in early September is a great opportunity to go back into the fantastic anime-inspired MOBA DOTA: Dragon’s Blood. The third book debuted in the middle of August, and the quality of this Netflix Original has not diminished at all.

Considering the vastness of the library’s canon titles, it would be insanity to leave out the excellent episodes that this program continues to produce, but for the time being this list only includes canon anime series. Rilakkuma’s Theme Park Adventure, starring Japan’s cutest bear, Kaoru, and their pals, returns at the end of August with eight brand-new episodes of humor and adventure. Taking a break from serious work and resetting your mind with some light entertainment can be just what the doctor ordered.

And if you’re in the mood for an anime feature, don’t miss Studio Colorado’s (A Whisker Away) Drifting Home, which premieres in cinemas on September 9 and on the platform on September 16. Featuring the work of Hiroyasu Ishida guarantees an eye-popping presentation. Please take into consideration that this is a list of anime series, not anime movies. American Netflix users alone, please. It’s possible that some games aren’t yet accessible on all international systems (yet). This list will be regularly updated to reflect the addition of new anime series and the removal of those that have been discontinued by Netflix.

Eden

Sometimes it seems like everything in the world is just a complete mess. Your end-of-the-world journey might benefit from some moral clarity, after all. People haven’t lived on Earth for a millennium. In a metropolis known simply as Eden 3, artificial intelligence robots call home. However, despite the absence of their former masters, the robots have kept up with farming. A human infant girl is unexpectedly roused from stasis by two robots doing maintenance work.

Eden
Eden

There is no doubt in their minds because of her appearance. The two robots make the decision to take the girl under their protection and raise her in a remote area away from the metropolis. Good voice acting brings Eden’s interesting character designs to life. The plot is lovely in its simplicity. Lacking in cliché subversion, yet sometimes just what a post-apocalyptic fiction needs: sweetness.

Death Note

The plot of Death Note centers on a young man named Light Yagami, who acquires a mystical notebook that grants him the power to kill anyone whose name is written in it. An intriguing game of cat-and-mouse ensues between him and the detective who is determined to find out who is responsible for the murders.

Death note
Death note

This masterpiece by filmmaker Tetsuro Araki is a compelling examination of ethics and friendship. Death Note is an all-time masterpiece thanks to its timeless art and character design. It appears as though everyone and everything in the world wants to make their lives a living hell. An old-school anime that explores the darker side of life while yet showing that you have control over your own destiny is always a safe bet.

Spriggan

Based on the manga by Hiroshi Takashige and Ryji Minagawa, the first season of Spriggan was just six episodes long, but the show’s high level of action, stylish character design, and intriguing ideas helped it break into the top ten. Super-soldier Yu Ominae, 16, is the focus of Spriggan.

He is tasked with locating and protecting ancient items. Since many governments and non-government organizations (NGOs) want to get their hands on what they perceive to be potential weapons, Yu will have to defend the relics from any and all attackers.

This anime series stays true to its source material by making the most of its potential for the open-ended storyline, captivating characters, humor, necessary violence, and over-the-top action sequences. Both beginners and lovers of the manga and the first film will enjoy this globe-hopping journey, as it focuses on setting up the universe and the characters for future adventures while still making the most of their current arcs.

Little Witch Academia

The Little Witch Academia series is a hidden treasure in the streaming media canon. Yoh Yoshinari’s pastel-hued animation series is a visual treat. Atsuko Kagari admires her role model, a powerful witch. The only catch is that she doesn’t come from a magical family. The young woman, however, uses her charm and enthusiasm to enroll in Luna Nova Magical Academy, the school attended by her favorite wizard.

The subsequent shenanigans as she tries to figure out how to function in school are a mix of serious and funny. The characters are delightfully funny, and the animation is superb. It’s a lighthearted film with enough complexity to keep you guessing.

Gurren Lagann

The plot of Gurren Lagann revolves around a group of teenage villagers who unearth evidence that suggests a power-hungry nobility is forcing humanity to live in underground settlements.

This Gainax series is back on the list because of its excellent blend of high-octane action and comedy. The visuals are vivid, the setting is intricate, and the characters are dynamic. Not only that, but the mech design enhances the spectacle and propels the action.

Komi Can’t Communicate

The film Komi Can’t Communicate, directed by Ayumu Watanabe and based on the manga series by Tomohito Oda, tells the story of Shouko Komi, a very popular girl, and Hirohito Tadano, a fairly mediocre guy. Even though Komi seems confident to her classmates, she actually struggles with social anxiety which makes it hard for her to engage with her peers.

Komi Can’t Communicate
Komi Can’t Communicate

After learning his attractive classmate’s secret, Hirohito commits himself to helping her meet her goal of making 100 friends at their elite prep school. The slice-of-life animation Komi Can’t Communicate is exemplary of the genre. It takes a comedic approach to discuss sensitive topics. The people are interesting, and the situations they find themselves in the range from ludicrous to amusing to relatively serious, yet are never unbelievable.

This series is a perfect blend of comedy, action, and drama, and it’s brought to life with near-perfect animation, a beautiful color scheme, and impressive character design. If you enjoy slice-of-life anime shows but aren’t keen on sitting tight. The first season of the anime Komi Can’t Communicate is complete and available for viewing in the anime library.

High Score Girl

Sixth grader and gamer Haruo Yaguchi is the focus of High Score Girl, which chronicles his battle with a worthy opponent at the arcades. In his favorite video game, Street Fighter 2, Akira Oono, a fellow student who appeared to be virtually flawless in every way, defeated him. From there, the two become fast friends over their shared love of retro video games, which help them relax and forget about their worries.

Over time, Yaguchi realizes that Oono’s life isn’t as perfect as it seems and that he has a lot to discover about himself and the world. The antics, egotism, and life lessons found in High Score Girl are hilarious. Everybody needs a coming-of-age tale served with a little bit of irony and a little bit of nostalgia once in a while. If you’re a gamer with a rambling, self-motivating monologue, High Score Girl could be the perfect outlet for you.

One Piece

Long-running shonen anime One Piece follows the exploits of Monkey D. Luffy and his band of Straw Hat Pirates as they travel the world in search of the legendary One Piece and a chance to claim their rightful place as pirate rulers.

The anime adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s manga is packed with fast-paced action sequences and hilarious comedic moments. The show’s enduring appeal stems from its ensemble cast, a diverse group of male and female characters who share a sense of friendship and a thirst for adventure.

The Orbital Children

The Orbital Children, also known as Extra-terrestrial Boys and Girls, is a 2045 science fiction novel about five kids: two who were born on the moon and three who came to Earth as infants. The plot unfolds in a Japanese commercial space station in orbit, where access to the internet and AI is commonplace. After a terrible tragedy, these youngsters are stuck with almost no chance of being rescued.

The Orbital Children
The Orbital Children

They have to use their wits, their limited means of communication, and whatever else they can get their hands on to try to avert additional disaster…and possibly their own deaths. This two-part science fiction series, written and directed by Mitsuo Iso (Ghost in the Shell, Rurouni Kenshin, and Blade Runner: Black Lotus), not only puts anime in space but also looks into the void and wonders if humans are really necessary.

Iso takes aim at the dwindling time left on Earth’s ability to support human life. Then it questions whether or not people can save themselves if they do what has to be done. The Orbital Children is a coming-of-age story and full-fledged existential (and literal) crisis that shouldn’t be missed, despite the film’s philosophical schism (which is to be expected, given that it’s Mitsuo Iso). It achieves this through a brilliant combination of fluid animation, a striking color palette, and relatable character design (which puts its excellent voice cast to great use).

There are twelve episodes in the first season of Record of Ragnarok, and if you like The Seven Deadly Sins, list buddy JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, or the premise of the gods giving humanity one last chance to prove itself in a tournament setting, you’ll enjoy it.

Record Of Ragnarok
Record Of Ragnarok

The plot moves at a binge-friendly clip, the animation is classic, and the fights are over-the-top. Let the spectacle of 13 champions taking on the pantheon of gods be the last thing we do before contemplating our humanity and accepting our doom.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba

Tanjirou Kamado promises to save his sister and avenge his family after a demon attack kills most of his relatives and turns them into monsters. For the sake of vengeance, he associates himself with a shadowy organization known only as the Demon Slayer Corps.

Demon Slayer Kimetsu No Yaiba
Demon Slayer Kimetsu No Yaiba

If you’ve watched every episode of the last several seasons of Attack on Titans that your streaming service has and are looking for something similar but with better combat scenes, give Demon Slayer a try. I assure you that you will be pleased.

Seeda

You’ve just been going about your day as usual. Then, in the pause between actions, everything collapses, taking you with it. Basically, what would you do?

Seeda
Seeda

Those still alive must contend with gigantic insects and abandoned, flooded towns as nature take back what was once human territory. What an awful time to learn you aren’t prepared for the end of the world.

Aggretsuko

The fourth season of Aggretsuko would premiere in December 2021. Subtle reminders to persevere in the face of adversity permeate this slice-of-life animation. As it turns out, ten more episodes of watching a 25-year-old woman named Retsukothe deal with the ups and downs of her awful work as a police accountant, her poor dating life, and her life’s disappointments by turning to heavy metal aren’t all that great.

Aggretsuko

The caustic, humorous narrative and fully-loaded soundtrack stand out brilliantly against the spare visual aesthetic. If this show stays in Netflix’s catalog, it could become a perennial favorite.

Super Crooks

In December, Super Crooks made its debut on the platform, based on the four-issue comic book series by Mark Millar and Leinil Francis Yu. In this issue, which serves as a prelude to the comic series, Johnny Bolt and his gang plan the heist of the century.

Super Crooks
Super Crooks

Superhero fiction with a smooth introduction, straightforward plot, fascinating characters, and clean (Studio Bones) animation. This 13-episode 2021 shocker isn’t for everyone (especially fans of redemption arcs and character development), but it certainly deserves credit for being one.

B: The Beginning

The island of Cremona has become “Killer Bnew “‘s hunting area. The Royal Investigation Service has recalled their ace, the eccentric but brilliant detective Keith Flick, in an effort to apprehend this serial killer on the rise. The murders, however, are not what they seem to be, and Flick must uncover perilous truths in order to solve them.

B The Beginning
B The Beginning

If you’re looking for a good cat-and-mouse detective thriller with some twists, B: The Beginning is the place to go. For those who enjoy it when their anime tries new things (even if it doesn’t always succeed), this aesthetically spectacular story will deliver a blend of mystery and horror.

Code Geass

Lelouch, a prince of Britannia, is taken as a hostage and later escapes from Japan when an experience gives him the ability to influence anybody. Lelouch assumes the identity of the hooded rebel Zero and begins taking violent retribution on Britannia.

Code Geass
Code Geass

Code Geass combines elements from other genres, including action, charisma, and a healthy dose of bombast, all of which serve to propel the tale along from episode to episode. A chaotic adventure through an alternate past where mechs and magic coexist.

Dorohedoro

Dorohedoro is a chaotic and wacky anime about a giant crocodile who has a thing for gyoza, and it’s set in a pretty bleak world. About as much comedy as bloodshed.

Dorohedoro
Dorohedoro

The characters in this weird and bloody science fiction world are surprisingly interesting. Dorohedoro makes the most of its baffling setting by using vibrant colors and a fast tempo to both perplex and amuse its audience.

Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure

In this manga-inspired epic, each member of the Joestar family bears the same surname and is endowed with superhuman psychic strength, making them formidable foes throughout history. Each new protagonist has their own story arc, which helps to deepen the world and maintain interest in the series.

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure
Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure

This fantasy adventure has exactly the perfect amount of humor thanks to its sly wit and several references to current Western culture. Since JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure has been streaming on Netflix since December 1 (with the most recent season, Stone Ocean), its inclusion on the best-of list may be a little delayed.

Cowboy Bebop

An accident with a hyperspace portal has rendered Earth uninhabitable in the universe of Cowboy Bebop. The last of humanity has spread out throughout the solar system’s stony planets and moons. After fifty years of escalating crime, the Interstellar Police turn to legal bounty hunting and authorized hunters, sometimes known as Cowboys, to seek and capture criminals across the system and bring them to justice.

Cowboy Bebop

Cowboy BebopThe series centers on the crew of the spaceship Bebop and their pursuit of criminals in the year 2071. Space (MIS)adventures of former syndicate member and hitman Spike, his former ISSP officer partner Jet Black, a con artist with memory gaps, a wacky hacker, and Ein, a too-cute-for-its-own-good genetically engineered Welsh Corgi with human-like intelligence; now iconic soundtrack; vintage (but still solidly stylish) animation style.

With its genre-bending story, graphically energetic action, and bold good fun, the twenty-six-episode series is a fantastic entry point for newcomers to the anime realm as well as a treat for longtime fans. It remains to be seen whether or not the decision to cancel the whole anime series before the November 19, 2021 launch of the live-action Cowboy Bebop film franchise was beneficial or detrimental. Check out IGN’s review to see how the film version compares to the book!

Beastars

Beastars is a slice-of-life fantasy series that may appeal to you if you like your shounen to be occasionally NSFW and to have a storyline that is meant to explore issues like prejudice, choice, and contemplation.

Beastars
Beastars

The lifestyles of anthropomorphic animals, both carnivorous and herbivorous, are explored in depth in this suspenseful mystery series. If Zootopia-eques that dig into slice-of-life stories and self-discovery are what capture and retain your interest then Beastars is absolutely an anime series for you.

Violet Evergarden

The thirteen episodes of this anime, adapted from a light book series, follow fourteen-year-old Violet Evergarden as she adjusts to civilian life after the end of World War II. This fantasy narrative of self-discovery follows a young orphan as he seeks meaning in his life beyond the role of a soldier. The story is thoughtful and emotionally resonant, and the music is outstanding.

Violet Evergarden
Violet Evergarden

This show is the reason why “visually amazing” will never go out of style. It is without question one of the most stunningly animated shows on television. Right now is a great opportunity to watch this show again before moving on to Violet Evergarden: As of October 13, 2021, the movie could be viewed on the streaming service.

Hunter x Hunter

Hunter, Hunter is how you say it (the x really is silent). Gon, still, a young man embarks on a search for his father. On his journey to become a Hunter, he meets new people, competes in a martial arts tournament, and encounters monsters that any aspiring horror movie set designer would give anything to get their hands on.

Hunter x Hunter
Hunter x Hunter
