Abel Makkonen Tesfaye was born in Toronto, Ontario and he is the only child of his parents who got separated after his birth. He grown up along with the company of his Mother & Grandmother.His parents were immigrants from Ethiopia so he was also raised as an Ethiopian.

He didn’t had such a strong attachment or relation with his father. He barely saw him in his life and he is happy that his father wasn’t abusive, alcoholic or an asshole. He has strong attachment to his mother.

His grandmother taught him their native language Amharic. This guy is multi lingual as he can fluently speak English, Amharic as well as french which he learned in a French-immersion school. Tesfaye wasn’t really into studies.

After facing a lot of backlashes and problems in life. He begun to anonymously uploading videos on youtube in August 2009. In the same year, things got better when life gave Tesfaye a chance when he met Jeremy Rose who is a producer and at that time he had an idea regarding Dark Contemporary R&B.

Earlier he was going to offer this to Musician Curtis Santiago but things went in the favor of Tesfaye when Rose played one of his instruments and he did freestyle rap over it. They both worked together and produced three songs- “What you need”, “Loft Music” and “The Morning” sung by Tesfaye which were later scrapped due to some issues.

Rose let tesfaye keep those tracks only under one condition that he would get the credit for the music and Tesfaye agreed to it. In December 2010, Tesfaye uploaded “What You Need”, “Loft Music” and “The Morning” to YouTube under the username “xoxxxoooxo”. His identity was initially unknown.

The songs drew some attention online, and were later included in a blog post from rapper Drake. The songs subsequently received coverage from various media outlets, including Pitchfork and The New York Times.

It was hard for Tesfaye to choose his stage name. At first he used two aliases: The Noise and Kin kane but he changed his mind. He later chose The Weeknd as a tribute to the fact that when he dropped out from his school, “Left one weekend and never came Home”.

To Avoid trademark issues with Pop Rock band The Weekend , the letter E was expelled out of his stage name.
