“Both the cast and crew have been deeply impressed by Liam’s dedication, enthusiasm, and embodiment of the character since day one — complete with the rugged beard and iconic scar! We’re thoroughly enjoying the filming of season 4 and eagerly anticipate sharing this journey with fans.”
Stepping into the shoes of Geralt for “The Witcher” season 4 is Liam Hemsworth, known for his roles in “The Hunger Games” and “Independence Day: Resurgence.” Hemsworth takes over the lead role from Henry Cavill, who portrayed the character since the fantasy drama’s debut season in 2019.
Cavill’s departure from the show was announced in 2022, coinciding with shifts in Warner Bros.’ plans for the DC superhero movie lineup, where Cavill was expected to continue as Superman. Subsequently, Cavill redirected his focus to both acting in and producing a “Warhammer 40,000” series for Amazon.
“In my time as Geralt of Rivia, I’ve encountered my fair share of monsters and adventures,” stated Cavill in a social media post. “Stepping into my shoes, the remarkable Liam Hemsworth will now don the mantle of the White Wolf. Like the greatest literary characters, I hand over the torch with respect for the journey I’ve had embodying Geralt and excitement to witness Liam’s interpretation of this complex and captivating character. Liam, this role holds a rich depth waiting to be explored. Embrace the journey and uncover its secrets.”
Hemsworth now joins the returning cast members: Freya Allan reprising her role as Princess Cirilla, Anya Chalotra as sorceress Yennefer, and Joey Batey as minstrel Jaskier. “As a devoted Witcher enthusiast, I couldn’t be more thrilled to embody Geralt of Rivia,” expressed Hemsworth in a prior statement.
“Henry Cavill has truly been extraordinary as Geralt, and I feel deeply honored that he’s passing the torch to me, entrusting me with the White Wolf’s journey for the next phase of his adventure. Henry, I’ve admired your work for years and am inspired by the depth you’ve brought to this cherished character. While I acknowledge the sizable shoes to fill, I’m genuinely eager to delve into The Witcher universe.”
While Geralt remains a beloved figure among Witcher aficionados across books, video games, and the TV series, season 3 laid the groundwork for an amplified focus on Ciri. “One of the key aspects of Ciri is that we’ll gradually uncover that she is the central figure of the Witcher saga,” remarked executive producer Tomek Baginski in a behind-the-scenes special for season 3. “Not Geralt, not Yennefer. It’s Ciri’s narrative.”
Netflix revealed a host of fresh faces joining the ensemble for season 4, including Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix, John Wick) as the beloved Barber-surgeon Regis, Sharlto Copley (District 9, Monkey Man) as the notorious bounty hunter Leo Bonhart, James Purefoy (The Following, Solomon Kane) as Emhyr’s court advisor and esteemed spy Skellen, and Danny Woodburn (Watchmen, Mirror Mirror) as the dwarf Zoltan.
