Time Magazine Has Named BLACKPINK: It’s more proof of BLACKPINK’s worldwide fame as the group was named ‘TIME’ magazine’s ‘2022 Entertainer of the Year. The female group follows BTS, who won in 2018, as the only other K-Pop act to ever get the honour.

In a special feature, ‘TIME’ looks back at BLACKPINK’s career as a band while simultaneously engaging with the individual perspectives of its members. BLACKPINK, meanwhile, will spend the rest of 2019 and the first few months of 2023 on the European and Asian legs of their “Born Pink” world tour.

South Korean girl trio Blackpink consists of Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa and was created by YG Entertainment. Square One, the group’s debut single album, peaked at No. 1 on South Korea’s Gaon Digital List and No. 1 on the US Billboard World Digital Song Sales chart, respectively, in August of 2016.

Blackpink is the most successful Korean girl group abroad and has been dubbed the “largest girl group in the world” by media outlets. Their single “Ice Cream” peaked at number thirteen on the US Billboard Hot 100 in 2020, and their second studio album Born Pink peaked at number one on the Billboard 200 in 2022; it was the first album by a Korean girl group to sell more than two million copies.

They also broke new ground by becoming the first Korean female group to enter and ultimately dominate the Billboard Emerging Artists chart. The music video for Blackpink’s 2018 single “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du” was the first by a Korean group to surpass one billion views, and it is currently the most viewed by a Korean group on YouTube.

As a result, Blackpink became the first female Korean act to receive a certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). They made history in 2018 with their collaboration with Dua Lipa, “Kiss and Make Up,” which was certified platinum in Australia and gold by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) (ARIA).

The Album (2020) was the first album by a Korean girl group to sell over one million copies and the highest-charting female Korean album at the time, peaking at number two on the Billboard 200; both records were later broken by Born Pink.

After the success of their debut studio album, Born Pink, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and the UK Albums Chart, the group’s lead single, “Pink Venom,” became the first song by a K-pop group to top the ARIA Singles Chart and the first song by a girl group to top the Billboard Global 200 in 2022.
