“Twitter Files” 3 On Trump’s Ban Shows That Trilogies Aren’t As Good As They Seem

Following the Jan. 6 Capitol attack, then-President Donald Trump was banned from Twitter, according to the third chapter of the ongoing “Twitter Files” by Substack journalist Matt Taibbi.

Similar to the first and second “leaks” of documents, which Elon Musk hailed as exposés of “free expression suppression,” the third installment of the Twitter drama is essentially a long explanation of the social media platform’s most famous content-moderation choice: suspending a president in office. Is this the first head of state to ever be suspended while in office? Early in the thread, an unnamed Twitter employee queries.

In a piece titled “The Removal of Donald Trump,” former Rolling Stone reporter Matt Taibbi distributed excerpts of communications that Musk’s team had given him access to. A 67-post Twitter thread that followed attempted to expose it.

“the erosion of standards within the company in months before J6, the erosion of standards within the company in months before J6, decisions by high-ranking executives to violate their own policies, and more, against the background of ongoing, documented interaction with federal agencies.”

The thread also claims that Twitter used internal bots to try and stop the then-president from spreading false information about the election in the weeks leading up to Jan. 6 and even as far back as Election Day. The relevance is that it demonstrates that Twitter, at least in 2020, was using a variety of public and covert tactics to limit Trump’s participation even before J6, according to Taibbi. After all other options have been explored, the prohibition will be implemented.

The thread, however, neglected to mention that a lot of this information was previously widely known and, as a result, had been researched ever since the former president instigated a disturbance in the Capitol and was eventually expelled.
