Zico Shares Collaboration Process With Jennie, Crafting Personalized Tracks For SPOT
Zico recently revealed on the “Neighborhood Star K” YouTube channel how much work went into getting BLACKPINK’s Jennie for his new single.
The interview’s host, Jonathan, brought up Jennie’s inclusion in Zico’s most recent song and said, “Were you guys already friends? Do you handle the feature casting yourself?”

Zico answered, “We were acquaintances. I usually do the casting myself. I hadn’t settled on a featured artist when I was working on the music. I thought of Jennie while creating the songs and decided to collaborate with her.” He added, “I prepared custom options. I created about six songs and narrowed it down to two, then asked which one was a better fit.”
Jonathan asked, “So, you prepared everything because you weren’t sure what she would like?” Zico clarified, saying, “Exactly. If you limit the options, the artist might not find them interesting.” He talked about how he approaches working with artists, stressing how important it is to let them feel free and not pressured.
“When playing the music, you hope for a nod, but I couldn’t help but make gestures to get a bounce at certain parts,” Zico candidly said to Jennie during the song presentation.
He went on to say, “Since I had never worked with Jennie before, I needed to understand her style. Jennie continuously interprets the music on her own. Rather than me presenting options, we’d record and she would say, ‘I like this.'”
The result of this collaboration has been the success of “SPOT!,” which as of April 30 achieved an “all-kill” on the daily charts and dominated daily music charts across major platforms like Melon, Bugs, Genie, Naver VIBE, and FLO.
Remarkably, ‘SPOT!’ has been at the top of Bugs every day since its release. Zico released this song for the first time in his ten years as a solo artist. It depicts an open moment between two friends at a late-night party.
