On December 31, 2022, actor Lee Jong-suk (33 years old) and idol-actor IU (29 years old) confirmed their relationship had blossomed into love with heartfelt letters. The letter sent K-pop and K-drama fans into a frenzy because the two celebrities were famous and more importantly, because they had known each other for over ten years.
Officially speaking, Lee Jong-suk mentioned IU in a recent interview with Esquire Korea. He further brought up the public’s knowledge of the two’s friendship and camaraderie in the interview. What Was the Turning Point in IU’s Career Leading to National Stardom?
The South Korean singer-songwriter, composer, and actress Lee Ji-eun goes by the stage name IU. She became a trainee with LOEN Entertainment (now Kakao Entertainment) in 2007, and she made her singing debut with her first extended play (EP), Lost and Found (2008), when she was fifteen years old. The release of “Good Day,” the lead single from her 2010 album Real, catapulted her to national stardom, even though her subsequent albums, Growing Up and IU…IM, also achieved mainstream success. Following its 2019 debut at #1 on Billboard’s “100 Greatest K-Pop Songs of the 2010s” list, “Good Day” spent five weeks running on South Korea’s Gaon Digital Chart.
In 2008, after ten months of training, IU debuted under her stage name, which LOEN came up with to mean “I and You become one through music.” On September 18, 2008, she made her professional singing debut with a live performance of her debut single, “Lost Child” (Korean: λ―Έμ), which she performed on the music program M Countdown. From her first extended play (EP), Lost and Found, which came out on September 24, 2008, the lead single “Lost Child” showcases her talent. In November of that year, IU was honored with the title of “Rookie of the Month” by the South Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism for the album. Having said that, the record was a commercial flop. In a 2011 interview, IU expressed gratitude for the fact that her debut album was unsuccessful.
