A member of the sixth generation of German Brazilians, Bündchen is the daughter of Vânia (née Nonnenmacher), a retired bank clerk, and Valdir Bündchen, a sociologist and writer, who were both born in the city of Horizontina, Rio Grande do Sul. Despite her desire to play volleyball, Bündchen’s mother enrolled her and her sisters Patricia and Gabriela in a modeling course in 1993 so that they could gain self-assurance and improve their posture. The course culminated with a trip to Rio de Janeiro, So Paulo, and Curitiba as a reward for the girls, where Elite Model Management discovered her in a mall.
Previously known as Look of the Year, Bündchen came in second place at Elite Model Look’s national modeling competition. She began her career as a model in 1995 when Bündchen relocated to Sao Paulo. In 1996 she made her runway debut at New York Fashion Week.
