K-pop trainees compete for a spot in the debuting group in survival shows, where they showcase their unique talents and skills. The charisma and appeal of the trainees, as well as their abilities in singing, dancing, rapping, and other genres, are all considered when evaluating them.
Now, more and more K-pop groups are emerging as a result of survival shows. However, hardly many groups in the first wave of K-pop had to compete in a survival show to make their debut. View the established K-pop boy groups that were created through survival training.
BIGBANG
The venerable boy band BIGBANG is considered a pioneer in many facets of K-pop. According to legend, they were the first K-pop group to be created through a survival program. YG Entertainment’s “BIGBANG The Beginning” is an 11-episode self-produced documentary series.
In the 2006 release of the series, which portrayed the creation of BIGBANG, Hyunseung was thus removed from the BIGBANG debut lineup and eventually made his debut with BEAST.
2 PM and 2 AM
The pre-debut boy band, One Day’s training is documented in the JYP Entertainment documentary “Hot Blood.” Former member Jay Park was ranked first in the documentary because he received the most fan votes. Three trainees are also removed from the group as part of it.
Only eleven members survived as the documentary came to a close. One Day was split into two groups, 2 PM and 2 AM, each with seven members: 2 PM was a hip-hop group, and 2 AM was a ballad group.
VIXX
Another seasoned South Korean boy band, VIXX, was produced by Jellyfish Entertainment as part of the “MyDOL” survival reality program in 2012. The program was broadcast on the Mnet channel from April 12 through May 31, 2012.
To create the debut lineup, a group of ten Jellyfish Entertainment trainees competed with one another in a variety of tasks and activities. Six of the trainees were ultimately chosen, and they made their debut as VIXX members.

WINNER
Through Mnet’s 2013 reality survival show “WIN: WHO IS NEXT,” YG Entertainment created WINNER. The name of the group, WINNER, is taken from the program. There are a total of 11 episodes. Two teams of YG trainees were formed in this situation.
Team A, which consisted of the members of WINNER, competed against Team B, which included other YG Trainees who would later become known as iKON. Team A was crowned “winner” in the program’s concluding episode.
iKON
Since all of YG Entertainment’s boy groups are the offspring of such contests, the company adores watching survival shows. Another boy band that YG developed through a survival program is iKON. iKON had to endure not one but two survival shows before making their debut.
They first participated in “WIN: Who Is Next” as Team B and lost to WINNER. Then, Team B members and three new trainees participated in the 2014 reality survival show “MIX & MATCH.” One of the new trainees, Jung Chan-woo, was included in the debut lineup due to the show.
MONSTA X
Through the boy group reality survival program “NO.MERCY,” which debuted on the Mnet channel on December 10, 2014, Starship Entertainment created the K-pop boy band MONSTA X. There were a total of 13 trainees. To obtain a spot in the seven-member boy band MONSTA X, the trainees competed against one another in a range of performances and challenges set by the judges. There are ten episodes in the show.
SEVENTEEN
Pledis Entertainment created the thirteen-piece South Korean boy band Seventeen, which made its debut in 2015. The participants were in the reality TV show “Seventeen Project: Big Debut Plan,” which aired on MBC from May 2 to May 26, 2015. Unlike past survival shows where players competed against one another, this program’s survival concept was “trainees versus Pledis.” The group’s debut display brought the evening to a close.

PENTAGON
In response to the 2016 Mnet reality survival show “Pentagon Maker,” Cube Entertainment developed Pentagon. The program was broadcast online by M2, Mnet’s digital content brand. The five categories used to determine the squad were singing or rapping, dancing, talent, mind, and teamwork.
Each participant was assessed either singly or collectively. Despite being eliminated from the competition, Yan An, E’Dawn, and Shinwon were later called to join the Pentagon group’s debut lineup.
