Some actual events are so heartbreaking that they must be shared with the world. Then there are the horrific ones that keep getting told and never die. One such tale is recounted in the novel Society of Snow (La Sociedad de la Nieve).
We live in a world of relative ease and convenience, and it’s easy to forget that other people have endured hardships we’ll never know. Although the tale of the rugby team whose plane crashed in the Andes has been told before, this telling pays more attention to the recollections of those who were actually there. There are several unexpected turns in this story.
Exactly What Occurred In The Andes
The Uruguayan rugby squad was aboard a plane that went down in the Andes Mountains on October 13, 1972. Many people amazingly survived after the jet broke into several pieces. The battle for survival had just begun, however, and it would force everyone involved to make some difficult choices.
After 72 days, only 16 of the original 45 passengers were still alive. However, the accounts of those who managed to escape are filled with the fear of life in such an intense environment.
The first order of business for the surviving was to assess the extent of the injuries. People associated with the team, such as family members, were included. There were some with broken bones and others who were so emotionally and psychologically distraught that they could not function.
A select handful were not only able to aid their fellow survivors but also figure out how to keep warm and start fires with the limited resources they had. They were also eager to carefully ration any food they managed to salvage from the rubble. There was no food to be found in the region because they were surrounded by snow.
Eventually, the gang runs out of food and other resources and understands that they won’t be able to make it. Everyone involved is forced to make a choice that nobody particularly enjoys doing. The cold has preserved small amounts of meat from the bodies of the group’s dead members, which the group harvests.
They come to terms with the fact that they will not be rescued and decide to take action in order to secure their survival. A small group of people gather their survival gear and go out on foot. They eventually locate the crash site and dispatch rescue helicopters to retrieve the surviving passengers.

Comparable to Another Movie
The movie Alive came out in theaters in 1993. The tale is similar to that of Society of Snow, although it is told in a very different fashion. Many people who saw the film in their youth refer to it as “that cannibal soccer team movie,” referring to its fictionalized depiction of the true events.
It included a slew of up-and-coming Hollywood performers, and it got some positive reviews. Ethan Hawke, Josh Lucas, Josh Hamilton, and Jacob Noseworthy were among them. In addition, the film’s narrator was played by John Malkovich.
Although the film was based on Piers Paul Read’s Alive: The Story of the Andes Survivors, many viewers felt that significant liberties were used in the adaptation. Two years after the disaster, the book was published. The film is being marketed as a feel-good tale of success and perseverance.
It ups the stakes by providing a sensationalized view of what people do in such situations. Being alive is a terrifying ordeal that occurs frequently. However, it’s worth seeing before Society of Snow to get a sense of how things change when a first-hand story is told instead of a sensationalized one.

What Makes This Film Unique
The films’ origin stories are what set them apart. The original title of this film is La Sociedad de la Nieve (Society of Snow in English), which translates to “The Snow Society” in Spanish. It was inspired by Pablo Vierci’s tale of the same name. Vierci was not just a writer but also a person who grew up with many of the survivors.
A significant problem with Alive has also been sidestepped in the film. It is not a sanitized version. Real Argentine and Uruguayan performers, many of whom had no acting experience prior to being cast in La Sociedad de la Nieve, appear in the film.
Even though it may not have been a significant matter back in 1993, nowadays, it is extremely problematic for a biopic to use a cast that is not an accurate representation of the subject’s ethnicity or culture.
The film’s director, J.A. Bayona, is a seasoned professional whose debut feature, The Orphanage (El Orfanato, 2007), is widely regarded as one of the finest Spanish horror/psychological thrillers of the past two decades. Since then, he has helmed films and TV shows such “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” and “A Monster Calls.”
This film serves as a dramatized biopic of the many people who played roles in the Andes disaster. With this director, cast, and language, it will be much more authentic in tone and presentation. Society of Snow may be the most recent telling of the tragedy that unfolded in the Andes in 1972 for anyone interested in the subject.
