In 1961, Bill Gothard founded the Institute in Basic Life Principles (IBLP), an organization that originated from his master’s thesis while pursuing a graduate degree in Christian education.
Gothard’s thesis outlined “seven Biblical, non-optional principles of life” that promote harmonious relationships in all areas of life, which eventually became the foundation of his seminars.
Over time, his teachings gained popularity, particularly within the whole Christian community, leading to the expansion of IBLP into a Christian ministry with multiple campuses, workshops, and a homeschool program with a strong emphasis on religion.
However, as the Shiny Happy People docuseries revealed, allegations of s*xual harassment and molestation within the IBLP emerged in 2014.
Numerous young women who Gothard had mentored during their time in the organization came forward with complaints. More than 30 women accused Gothard of misconduct, ultimately resulting in his resignation as the leader of IBLP.
In 2016, The Washington Post reported that ten women filed a lawsuit against Gothard and other church leaders, alleging s*xual harassment, s*xual abuse, and cover-ups. Gothard denied the allegations, stating, “Never in my life have I touched a girl s*xually.
I’m shocked even to hear that.” However, in 2018, the case was dropped for unknown reasons, and Gothard labeled the accusations in the lawsuit as “false and defamatory statements” on his website.
Where is Bill Gothard Now?
According to tax records obtained by Patch, the 88-year-old former leader of IBLP now resides in a quiet life on Arlington Avenue in La Grange, Illinois. It’s important to note that he is no longer associated with the organization.
While there has been speculation about Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar’s potential involvement in the leadership of IBLP, no official confirmation has been provided by the Duggar family.
Despite the controversies surrounding him, Gothard maintains an active presence on Facebook. His last post was made on May 23, 2023, but he has not addressed the Prime Video documentary in any of his posts.
In November 2022, a moderator for his Facebook page shared a photo of Gothard at a men’s gathering in his home, celebrating his 88th birthday.
The post mentioned some challenging events that Gothard experienced that year, including shattering his ankle while pruning trees and testing positive for COVID-19 without experiencing any symptoms, giving thanks to the Lord.
