My Little Aurora

Princess Aurora, or Sleeping Beauty, is a made-up princess from Walt Disney Productions’ 16th animated feature film, also known by its alternate name, Briar Rose (1959). Aurora, whose voice was originally provided by Mary Costa, is the only child of King Stefan and Queen Leah.

Maleficent, an evil fairy who was not invited to Princess Aurora’s christening, places a curse on the baby girl, saying that she will die from a prick to the finger caused by the spindle of a spinning wheel before the sun sets on her sixteenth birthday.

Merryweather, however, mitigated the effects of the curse enough that Aurora would just go into a profound sleep rather than perish. Aurora’s true love, Prince Phillip, must kiss her on her sixteenth birthday in order to break the spell, so three nice fairies raise her as a peasant to shield her from harm.

Aurora was inspired by the princess from Charles Perrault’s “Sleeping Beauty” and the heroine from the Brothers Grimm’s “Little Briar Rose” version of the same story. Walt Disney had been looking for an actress to voice the princess for a while and was on the verge of giving up on the picture before composer Walter Schumann stumbled upon Costa.

But until she proved that she could keep up a British accent throughout the film, Costa was almost written out of the part because of her southern accent. Aurora’s refined design required more time and work than had ever been spent on an animated character previously, with the animators borrowing inspiration from Art Nouveau to match the film’s unprecedentedly rich backdrops.

Aurora’s slim proportions were modeled after Audrey Hepburn’s by animator Marc Davis. He has fewer lines of conversation than any other main character in a Disney animated feature picture (18), and he only appears on screen for a total of three minutes.
